BU353 for the hardware.
As for software, you're going to have to try out different packages to see what works best for you.

If you want cheap, get Microsoft Streets and Trips.
If you want touchscreen friendly and overall great GPS app, get iGuidance v3.
I would not recommend Destinator since development has kinda been stalled. However, if you buy Centrafuse for your frontend, they offer CF+Destinator as a package.

Well considering that iNav wants $109 for iGuidance software only, $159.99 for software, GPS, and GPSGate sounds like a good deal to me..
To answer your previous question, yes, you will want the USB cable so you can use it with your PC.
Last but not least, it looks to me like the i.trek is a re-branded bu-353.

Don't worry about it. You don't NEED GPSGate, but it is nice to have in case you wanted to run two GPS applications at teh same time.
GPSGate is manufactured by a company called Franson, and it's basically a virtual serial port splitter, which enables multiple applications to access the GPS data stream.
It's a seperate download and just requires you to send an email with your purchase # in order to obtain the registration code.
