Linux GPS software help

I am looking for GPS software that will run on linux on a 480x272 screen for a custom project that will sit on the dashboard. Can anyone point me in the right direction of a good commercial application? What I really need is guidance and route planning, for the US.

Thanks,
Brian

There's no linux native app like this yet. Look for Roadster project, it's in early development state, but so far shows the maps, and uses gps to position them. Routing is not implemented yet though.

that's what I was afraid of. I frequently contact TomTom, but they have no plans to offer a Linux version. Do you know if anyone has anyone ported a commercial package for CE successfully to linux?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
There is currently a thread in the Linux forum about this: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/linux/82704-iguidance-2-1-3-wine.html

Basically, with crossover office beta 6, iGuidance v3 works out of the box. I have been stress testing it, and it works very well.

Well, there's Navigator 4.4 Plus Europe. Written using QT, works both for Windows and Linux. The Linux version uses its own supplied qt shared library which produces really ugly un-antialiased fonts. I replaced it with the standard qt library from Fedora Core 6 and now the fonts look really nice. It wants to control a GPS device directly, but using gpspipe and a named pipe it can be tricked into using gpsd.

I don't have a Car PC yet, but looks OK on my laptop.

[edit: sorry, no US maps]

Pim

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on their website for well over a year, every time I email them they say US maps are "coming soon"...I finally stopped holding my breath

Hmm, their current website suggests Linux support has been dropped for the upcoming version 6.

Bummer.
