Sure, all you need is a computer. There is no standalone GPS unit that I know of, that has a video/VGA output.

Well, since a laptop is a computer, you should be able to get it to work.

You need to READ READ READ. I suggest you start here

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/faq-emporium/

If you are not sure how to do it, then you either need to learn how to do it, or high someone to do it.

Simplest way seeing as how you haven't read too much would be an inverter. I will leave you to read to find out why this is bad. For physically pushing the button, you will need to solder some leads onto your power button, and then when you tap 'em together, on or off it will go. You can also tap them together using a switch. (relay or not)

Welcome newbie!
A good place to start researching your project: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/newbie/78795-new-carpcs-dont-know-where-start.html

More advanced reading for you: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=106

And I disagree with 2k1Toaster... The simplest way of powering a laptop would be a car power adapter for the specific make/model of laptop. But an inverter certainly is a simple solution!
