IG3 "avoid" issue

I was driving from Detroit down to central Illinois after Thanksgiving and decided I wanted to avoid a sometimes problematic route taking I-94, instead opting for 69 down to Indianapolis. Problem is, 94 isnt defined as a single road, it has multiple parts as it merges and splits from I-80. Clicking avoid on only one section of I94 routes you around to a different section, and you continue on. I selected all instances of I80 and I94 in my route, told it to avoid, and still it routed me the same way, using those "avoided" roads. Selecting another crucial part of the route (I57) caused IG to crash. I guess this brings up three issues:

1) How can you easily make IG route around a whole stretch of roads if the names keep changing?

2) Anybody else have it just ignore your avoid commands?

3) Anybody else have problems with crashing when you try to avoid a road?

the avoid issue is a pain in the *** for sure. i'm working on a app that will read from traffic reports and auto re-route me but the issue with the same road having multiple names is giving me fits.

I find the iG 'Avoid' feature useless. It may help if you just wish to select one avoid segment, but the more road segments you add the more bizzare the routing can become.

So as far as I'm concerned that feature doesn't exist :-)

For what its worth, in S&T you can drag an avoid area "box" around a certain region and it will avoide any roads within the area regardless of the name. If you travel this route often that might be the way to go. Or you could just intentionlly drive off-route and have IG sream at you until it gives up.

I find S&T to be very poor for in-car use on a small screen. IG3 UMPC is the best I've found. And thats exactly what I ended up doing, just manually looked up what roads I needed to be on, then after a while it finally stopped telling me to take a u-turn and just routed me through indy. Wish the features actually worked though...

Hahaha...welcome to Chicago where every road is always under construction and the roads have 6 different names.

I like IG better than my Delorme I was using but it is completely worthless for calculating the best route even. When I first tried it out it sent me out of my way from my house to work by as much as 10 minutes! And it didn't even try to use the expressway that runs right slong side the road I was on. And no I didn't have avoid Highways activated.

It's a nice Navigation program that will get you to where you need to go, but it needs some serious work on the fastest/shortest route methods. IMO.

So true. I live in the metro Detroit area. IG3 ALWAYS wants me to take roads instead of highways. I too have it set to fastest and use highways.

We recently went to West Virgina for white water rafting and IG3 took me country roads the ENTIRE way. It seems it went out of its way to AVOID major roads.

When ever I want to go to an appointment I always use Yahoo Maps to get an idea of how to get there, roughly what major roads it is by and start off going my own way. IG always tells me to turn around. I live about three miles north of I-94 and IG always tries to get me to drive 10 miles east to get on the express way instead of just heading south a few miles.

10 miles @ 45mph is sure as heck slower than 11 miles @ 70mph.

I've used Streets and Trips, liked it, and use Map Point (same as S&T but scriptable, what Street Deck uses).

Overall, have an idea of where you're going and what YOU think is the best route and when you get lost, follow its advice because sometimes humans know better than computers.

In my experience iGuidance is good at routing most of the time, but the "Quickest" (default) option has to be selected. The other three options (Shortest, Major, and Local) provide bizzare results - definatelly not what the features were designed to do.
