Exactly my thinking. But I went to the SiRF website early this morning to search for specifications for SiRFstarII chipset, but there is no longer any info about that old beast! I know there still were some PDF files a couple of years back.
Ideally, if we could dig out some specs on velocity accuracy of the chip, or even some general info on vehicle speed measurement by GPS.
The SiRFstarII chip, just like most other GPS products, update once per second. The speed measurement of a car speed by GPS is far superior to the speedometer. It's just a matter of presenting it nicely to the judge.

Have anybody think about the FCC number and then look at the FCC web site?
Good luck with the case though.

I think your best bet is to jsut crack open your gps reciever and see what chipset it is. Send a request directly to Microsoft (by registered mail and email, you're more likely to get a quick answer via email) for the information concerning the update speed.
As far as the officer saying that you could slow down and speed up that quickly, remember its up to them to prove it. Don't let them just say that it can happen and hope the court doesn't accept it. Remember, once you have the speed data from the GPS in as evidence, they have to prove its wrong or could have been worked around, saying that its possible doesn't cut it. So don't back down on that.
Good luck with all of this, I hope things work out for you.

Information page from manual
I have the same GPS just with the bluetooth docking station. So you can ignore the bluetooth data on the page. The GPS info is the same.
Velocity accuracy is 0.1 meter / second with SA off
You probably know SA is Selective Availability which was turned off by the US Government on May 1st 2000.
http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/FGCS/info/sa...statement.html
Should be an easy case with accuracy of 0.1 meters per second.
Good luck!
Jay

It's too big to upload here but I found a copy on the Pharos site. The GPS Microsoft supplies is the iGPS-360 (the piece you have). Most of the manual is about the bluetooth docking station.
Here is the link to the whole manual on the Pharos site.

Now, if it gets published, that would be quite interesting. It does give us all some hope though.

If he actually manages to win, I'm sure we could point it out to at least a technical magazine, and probably some smaller newspapers. It's worth a try...

That is not what I meant by "PUBLISH" Precedential Court Cases are "OFFICIALLY" published in set of books called "Reporters", which are published by a company called "West's"
That is what I meant by "publish".

Thanks Marvin... Sorry about the guest thing but I hadn't been on MP3Car for awhile and wasn't sure what username/password combo I had used and the ones I tried didn't work. It appeared he was in a hurry for the data so I went with the obvious. Anyway I'm back online now with my UserID. It will be interesting to hear the outcome of this case.
Take care,
Jay

When the officer said you could do 35-50-45 before the GPS updated you should have asked him if his car could do 35-50-45 in 1 second.
This will definitely be interesting. The bad part for me is that if I get a ticket it will most likely be because I was speeding...

I don't think the GPS specs will help you since these only specify best case results. Best thing would be to call the people at Pharos and ask them what the update frequency and accuracy of their velocity data is. Have them fax it and there's your brief.

I was just wondering, is it really worth it to go through the time and effort that the OP is going through to fight a speeding ticket?
I guess it would depend on how much he was speeding by? Or should all speeding tickets be contested? I had a failure to stop at a stop sign ticket, but I got it reduced to an improper stop ticket which did not include any demerit points. But I still paid the same amount of money on the ticket, so I'm just wondering is it worth it to contest the ticket for 110 dollars?
