A simple GPS solution
God bless the internet!
I really didn't want a regular screened GPS like those from Garmin - I just wanted an antenna that could supply the appropriate output.
Appears that this one just plugs into the USB port (and therefore has no other cabling requirements), and everything else is just software:

Price is USD$125 (+ shipping)
Is anyone else using one of these? Are they as simple as they look? How many seconds after getting it did you hit it with some paint to kill that nasty silver colour? :-)

i'm currently using the delorme gps - earthmate....its pretty good for about the same price, accept the supported software is a bit limited

I think the one that I linked above just outputs std NMEA sentences, and also collects its power from the USB port, which means no more masty batteries...

yup the earthmate sends in rockwell binary formatand a usb cable is available. the software is pretty good though. my car talks to me and tells me where to go

I hear you on that one C4M.
They also have a serial version that uses a cigarette lighter plug for power. (Look at the spec chart to the right of the page.)
Seems like it was designed specifically with car use in mind.

The specs on this one are pretty much the same as the one I linked above, and it's $30 cheaper. w00t! As if I needed any further persuasion, it's not silver!

Stick with the Garmin GPS35 or GPS16.
Just an antenna, but a top notch one. Garmin makes good stuff. Quick locking, modifiable behavior (choose what string come out), battery backed up, runs off car voltage, ruggedized, etc. etc.
I have a GPS35 and it works great. The GPS16 is basically the same thing, but slightly improved and with WAAS support. If I was repurchasing now, I'd get the GPS16 (wasn't out when I bought), although the GPS16 might require you to solder on a serial connector to the wires, whereas the GPS35 comes prewired.

I looked at the site, and the Garmin does look good. However:
* the ones linked above only require a USB connection (I only have one serial port, and it's busy)
* they take their power from the PC, meaning that there is only one cable necessary
* I only need std NMEA sentences for the software packages I plan on running
* I suck at soldering
