Thanks for the info on monkey talk. I haven't looked much into the mapmonkey stuff since I stopped using destinator.
Once I get the realtime part working those will use the Google maps since those seem to have the fastest scrolling.
I was just looking into using the MapQuest maps as it seems like those are offered in the most areas. The only thing I am worried about though is the whole legal issue. I read the terms and conditions and it says you can't reverse engineer their page, which I would have to do. Anyone know if I could get in trouble for putting their map images in my application?

Ok, Frodo, how about an open ended question this time How do I interface with MapMonkey, or get on msgr and tell me.

I'm at work, catch me tonight.

xBrady,
Just a quick observation, you'd need to observe the polarity of the Longitude for UK stuff, we span the meridian...

Alright, I'll be at school for a few more hours but I'll be sure to PM those that want to test this with the information.

Alright, I sent messages to (I think) everyone who said they were interested. If there is anyone else that I didn't get to or if anyone else would like to test, let me know.

As far as the maps go, I think I am going to see if I can get the mapquest maps to come up. I'll have to put their logo in the app on the map or something so hopefully I won't get into trouble.

Well, I was thinking that maybe the best was to do it is just use the coordinates and put them into this page: http://www.mapquest.co.uk/cgi-bin/ia...g_degrees_form
I just don't know how to send the coordinates to the mapquest server like the submit button does on that page. I can do it if the coordinates are somewhere in the URL like that UK site but in this case I don't know how. I'll keep looking into it tonight. So, right now I don't have it working with Mapquest, do you still want to test it out? If you wanted to see that map you would have to manually type in the coordinates.

Oh ya, I got my name changed

I see it currently send things to a proprietary server on a specific port right?

Would it be possible to make 2 additional options:
- Send e-mail from mobile to specific POP account, desktop program reads from pop account
- Have the coords uploaded to a website (through an http request, for example http://mysite.com/?lat=xxxxx&lon=yyyyy) this saves it on the server (really simple like on a text file), and then the desktop downloads that file on the fly to plot updates?

That way we can have data being sent to a server without needing a "client" to be reading the data all the time...

The idea being that I would have my webserver 24hrs online, but my laptopt with the desktop program would only need to be turned on to check stuff from my server... Alternatively in the future you can port your desktop program to run on a webserver...

I can write the Webserver part (to save/get coords/times) if you can send the lat/lon through a URL query string, and download a file with the data from the desktop... what do you think of this as a way of adding a tracking that doesnt need the desktop open?

It would be great to have both options in the program like "Connect Direct to Desktop" "Connect to Log Server" (and optionally "Track through e-mail address:________")...

I can do the server part in PHP with mysql backend or plaintext backend if its singleuser...

Right now my server runs 24/7 grabbing the data from the car client. The desktop client grabs that data from my server. So you don't ever have to have your desktop client running unless you want to grab information. Sorry I didn't explain that part of it very well. I am stroring it into a SQL database right now on my server. The realtime tracking will be coming soon. Does this fulfill both of your requests?
I got it working with the MapQuest for now by just sending it the coordinates. I am very open to any feature requests at all. I PMed you the download info.

I'd be very interested in beta testing...

For those of us who don't have GPRS, is there any chance you could make it upload data when connected to a random AP?
