how about just making it available?

That's all I would want out of it...is to be able to get it and use it...
I'm sure I could customize whatever I needed...but just being able to get it would be a start..

I'm going to dig up my older versions that I had been using. I don't think I have the newer version that's skinnable.

I'm just curious if you could make an option or separate prog that will just log coordinates and have the ability to ftp upload or an .asp post or something like that in a .txt format. Then I can easily copy and paste that into http://www.maps.google.com and see where my car is. But I dont have a constant internet connection but there are always wireless routers that my truck is connecting to as I drive or park. If it could upload only those points it would be very helpful for two reasons. One, I could create a map of unprotected wireless connections along my driving path. And two, if my truck were to ever be stolen, I would have a good chance at seeing where they are going. I think only the current point would need to be uploaded to make it a fast upload. If it was a whole log file of everywhere the truck has been, I think the file may be too big and probably wouldnt finish before it disconnected. I can help you with some of the asp code for the post method if you want. I'm no pro but I managed to set up a guestbook for my gf's pic webpage and it would work good for this purpose too.

I got an idea for another possibility. All the new trojans or RATS (REMOTE ADMINISTRATION TOOLS) as they are now being called have whats called reverse connection. What that means is the server (remote computer <carputer>) will connect to the client (desktop pc) rather than vise versa. It does this via IP or no-ip DNS for those of us with dynamic IP's. That way as the ip on the server changes as you drive through town the server will still connect to the same place every time. The desktop client has a connection tab and will show all the servers that are currently connected to the client. This would be for multiple vehicles. Now on the RATS, when you click on a connected server, it brings up a multitude of options for things to do to the remote computer. This wouldnt be needed and should simplify the programming emensely. All we would need is an option to view a history log that is saved locally every time there is a connection. I believe that most of the coding that goes into these RATs is for the purpose of bypassing detection. This also wouldnt be needed since it would be a legit remote tool. If the interface sounds to difficult, you could always use an acutal RAT since this is the reason they were technically built. At least thats what all the disclaimers suggest to cover their asses. A lot of these are very customizeable to someone who knows what they are doing. I can give you some websites and or progs if anyone is interested.

Sorry, I didn't see these posts till now. The new rewrite I'm doing will be skinnable shortly after the first release.

Either I'm not understanding what you are saying or GPSSecure already does this. It logs your position in a log file whether you have an internet connection or not and uploads them to the server whenever you connect to the internet, whether that be through a wireless connection, or a constant connection. You can see the logged locations on the web client which uses the Google Maps. The whole web client is written in ASP.NET.

Once again (if you are still around) sorry about not seeing these posts before. I'm subscribed to the forum but many times I don't get email notifications.

The new rewrite that I am doing already has this built in natively. This will be part of the first release.

If I'm reading correctly, it will attemt to upload on an interval, or does it sense a connection and attempt to upload then? If so, does it detect the connection quickly? i.e. under 5 seconds? I dont want to upload the log of where the car has been. Only where it currently is. If youve driven lots of places, the log would be too big and wouldnt upload in a short amount of time. Lets say you come to a stop sign in a residential area. I sometimes get a connection for 15 seconds or so. I think that is enough time to upload a current location but thats about it. This could be helpful to make a "HOT SPOT" map, and to help recover your car if ever stolen. Secondly, I would like the ability to send data to my own server. I don't like to rely on other servers that I have no control over. For instance, yesterday I tryed to register for an account on your site and it wouldnt allow it. It looked to me to be a problem on the server. (I may be wrong though) When your car is stolen the first couple hours are the most critical. Just like a kidnapping. Especially for those of us who live relatively close to the border. I would hate to have a server go down at that moment when I need it most. I understand that its difficult to help everyone set up there servers exactly like yours and thats the reason that we cant get the maps and stuff hosted on our computers but I think the coordinates alone uploaded to a log.txt on our own servers would be nice. Then what we do with the .txt is up to us. We can choose to read it and enter it into maps.google.com manually or write a script to do something cool. Am I making more sense?

or specifically, http://www.chasenet.org/home/page.php?9 is a good example of the software. This is very trusted software but your antivirus will pick it up becasue after all, it is still a trojan. It just happens to be one that you are creating and controlling. There are no backdoors in any of their software. Its safe to download and play around with. You can even create a server and install it on your own computer. They are difficult to remove server side but from the client there is an option to uninstall.
There used to be more of these forems but due to the questionable legality of the software, a lot of them have closed down. Lets continue this in the other topic I create - http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/software-software-development/71331-gps-tracking-client-server-software-help-needed.html

It depends on what you set it to. If you don't want to upload the logs of everywhere you have been then just turn on the live tracking and turn off the logged tracking. The live tracking will refresh every 5 seconds. The chances of you connecting to the internet and being disconnected within 5 seconds is pretty slim. First off when you drive around your computer isn't automatically going to connect to an access point unless you have previously had Windows connect to that access point. So far I've not seen any software that will connect you automatically to any unsecured access point.
If I change it so it detects less than 5 seconds people will complain about it using too much CPU power.
Bytheway, the live tracking isn't up anymore because I don't have time to resetup everything. I had the live tracking on a professionally hosted server last time that I've very rarely seen go down. Unless someone wants to pay me monthly for the service then I'm not going to even bother putting up the live tracking again until I get this new rewrite going.
What do you mean when you say the registration wasn't working? I've not heard of it having problems, let me know if it does.
There is no way that I'm going to make it so people can load the full server application that I have on their own computers and help them set up Microsoft SQL Server to work with it unless it is a business or someone that is going to pay me to do it. I know it sounds selfish but I just don't have the time to deal with that right now. I know how long it takes to set that type of thing up. It is very doubtful that you running the server on your own machine is going to be more reliable than than the live tracking I had up on a professionaly hosted server for awhile.
If you want a server app that will just receive the last GPS fix and save it to a text file then put it in the requests thread.

Lastly, I'm sorry if my tracking solution isn't 100%. I just don't have the time or resources to get it to 100%. I work full time and also go to school full time, plus I'm still single and unfortunately have to spend time dating. I think this rewrite will definitely help ensure that it will be close to 100% as I've got a lot more experiance with the whole thing through working on GPSSecure and through what I have done at work.

Hopefully you understood my quick ramblings here

I absolutely understand that you cant help everyone with the server stuff. But what I'm saying is that I think there is an easier way arond it. We really dont even need a web server. The client/server software that I have been talking about, I believe, will be easier and has a lot of potential to control other devices in our cars. Unfortuneately, I dont think anyone here knows how to do the whole thing, and nobody at chasenet fully knows how to do the gps portion. But if we get some coolaberation it wont be very cumbersome at all. I'm not critizising your software at all. I think its great but it's also nice to have choices. What works for some people may not work for others. I'm gonna try to register again, last time it said "can not connect to server" after what seemed like timing out on the request. Also, windows has a setting to automatically connect to non-prefered networks. Mine will connect when I come to a stop at a red light quite frequently. I used to keep aim turned on with the autoconnect and it would pop up my friend list whenever there was a connection. Sometimes long enough for me to send a text message.

Xbrady - Congrats good app - if you need help on the web site design let me know, I have some experince etc.

Re the web interface - I think that Co-pilots version is a good example - I'd like to see it so you can give a web page / id to a person and then select what they see.... ( may be even activatable via the client ? ). An example of which would be that I may want to log all my data how ever there may be times I would not want my other half to see it - and if it is was settable via the client you would not have to find the nearest web browser.

I also think having the option of a simple web interface is ideal with live tracking as it may be people who just want to see it rather than all the detail that is possible.

Re email / messaging... http://news.com.com/1606-2_3-6052333...2333&subj=news has a good emample of a messaging system... might be worth a look...

Finally - looking at the Freedrive intergartion - for those using the MC Skin that CDR did this would take a way the interactive speedo when working with your app.... any chance in your next version you can relay the same data on wards ? ( If you follow ? )

Thanks man, The complete rewrite of everything is being handeled by my (less than skilled) senior project team and I so until that is finished next month it all has come from us. Sorry about the page being all jacked up. When I moved it over to a new server I lost some things and didn't fix them up again. Like how everything is misaligned. I also lost the live tracking because the new server doesn't have mysql on it (this is a seperate system from the regular logged part) and it used to work.

The new rewrite already supports multiple vehicles per account and multiple sublogins with permission set up on them so this will definitely be there. Then from the vehicle client you can just change the vehicle you want to log into.

Ya, sorry the live tracking used to work. I never did get it back online when I switched servers. I just figured I'd put the time into the new application which already has a better live tracking system.

Great, I'll check it out. I'm starting on the messaging system for the new app today.

This thred should help... http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...&postcount=351

PS The remote 'guest viewers' off function would be cool... imagine your wifes tracking you and you dont want her to see where your going but you still want you to be able to review the tracking detail rather than switching off.

PPS - When you have PPC version shout me - happy to test.
