2.5" hard drive problem

i just got a new carpc that im settin up for a friend. Everything is working fine, except the computer cannot detect the hdd. the carpc came with a little 2.5" to 3.5" adapter but I'm not sure which way to plug it in (im not sure if its upside down or not) and then there are 4 pins that are over on the side that are just exposed with nothing covering them or anything. it seems kind of strange. the drive also doesnt appear to be on. its not vibrating or making noise at all. any help would be greatly appreciated!

The 4 pins are jumpers, don't worry about them. The adapter should have a mark for pin one. That pin is closest to those pins.

The 4 pins can also be the floppy power connector.

its still not working. iv had my desktop hdd not work because the jumpers were configured incorrectly. should i try messing with the jumpers?

Moving the jumpers around won't hurt anything. Remember the current setting and see what happens. If the drive doesn't spin up or anything, would suggest that the drive is connected backwards. I would try and flip the drive. That is assuming there are no pin indicators. Look closely and see if there are any markings on the adapter. They are usually a little arrow or a one that points to the first pin. I also assume that the power connector is hooked up. Also you could make sure that there is 5v being supplied from your source.

On a hard drive?? You hook up power to those pins and you'll fry it!

When that was posted I saw nothing of the poster saying it was a jumper block. He said "4 pins". No drive spinning up at all usually means a power issue, and no where in the thread did he say he connected power. A 2.5" drive takes both the mini-IDE and a power source. The 2.5"-->3.5" adapters usually have a floppy connector for power.

I was thinking he meant these pins. That would be the four to the bottom, you can only see two of them. The little arrow points to pin one.

The adapters I have use a full size molex connector for power.

Didn't mean any offense. I know you know your ****. Just didn't want him to fry the drive trying to input power to the jumper pins.

Okay, I've seen those before. Didn't realize that was a floppy power connector. I figured they used drive power jumper cables too. Would be nice to know what the OP's adapter was.

hey thanks for the help everybody! the adapter on the left is exactly like mine.
its started spinning now and showing up in the BIOS
now theres a NEW PROBLEM!
when i try and install windows it gets through most of the loading process and then says that it can't find a file or it is corrupted. it indicates the D: drive, where the CD is, and says that it cant find a file. the file is called update or system or something. im not sure, ill check it tomorrow after i get outta programming and tell you exactly what it says.
