The circuit is fairly simple. D1 is used only for reverse polarity protection. Remove it, as well as the black connection from D1->Fuse and D1->R1. So you are left with +12V->Fuse->R1. The rest of the black is ground. Just don't hook up the power supply backwards.
Actually, given the very low current draw of all components used, even the fuse is probably overkill. It's obvious that he's designed the circuit to be very robust under adverse conditions (read: idiot-proof), but the diode and fuse are basically overkill.
In fact, even R1 is overkill, assuming you have a clean 12v source. Besides, 1ohm 1/4Watt resistors aren't exactly common. Anyway, that's what C2 is there for: Noise filtering.
