I'm not a software guy, but would love to see something happen on that front.

If somebody wants to try tearing it apart let me now and I can get you the installer version of the software.

That's what I'm doing,

I'm about to redo my carPC and make it more permanent and sort out a couple bugs that it has. What I'll be doing is scrapping the current system (as described a page or so back) and starting the comp with the unlocking of the doors from the standard remote, and then starting the car once my mobile is within bluetooth range. Also converting a spare alarm remote I have for my after market alarm so that the comp can operate it.

I'm also off to Ford on Monday and going to ask my mate about the steering lock. I'm hoping I can convert it to electrically operated and then smoothe over the key hole in the steering column. Also moving the start button so it's not so easy to press.

I'll post it all up when it's done.

The real alarm system!!!

Here is what I want to do, I want to use my computer in the car to control the IGN, DOOR LOCKS, AND WINDOWS. I want to be able to be at my house or office and shut down my car if someone is stupid enough to steal my car. I want to be able to use the GPS to view where they have driven it via Google Maps, and I want to be able to lock the doors and keep them locked until the police get there!!!

Kinda like a lojack but much better!!!! This is the type of device we should be created to work with my roadrunner!

Who is in on this idea?

Phil

Sounds great ..... but in reality they would just break the window and get away.

You'd be better off keeping them from driving off with your car in the first place using a simple kill switch.

If you want your GPS tracking, set up an alarm and use a motion sensor to start the computer and let you know where it is anytime the motion sensor is tripped when the alarm is armed.

I have a question about the original idea. If you wanted to use a memstick to start the car, wouldn't you have to leave it in the USB port the entire time while driving, unless you wanted to go through the tedious process of ejecting the drive after every time you've started your car? If you didn't do this, even after you shut off the car, you'd then have to wait for the carputer to finish shutting down, and only then would you be able to remove the memstick. I think a password might work, but then you have to worry about a passenger looking over your shoulder while you enter the password. Perhaps a keypad on the door arm rest would work, but then you have to worry about rain getting on it... I dunno.

Well simply, no. With any decent practice in programming, you would only check for the memstick when youre starting the car. Once. Whatever happens before/after that is none of the computer's business. And you don't really have to eject it, most OSs take care of it as a removable device.

I realize it would only check before starting the car. The second part of your answer answered my question, though. I just thought it would stick up that annoying message complaining about removing a device before ejecting.

Regarding USB memory sticks and passwords etc.

AccessControl now has USB Key recognition as well as Keypad Password entry.

It also has GPS tracking (currently undergoing beta testing) utilising GPSGate's server (more servers available at a later date)

It can run a specified program on incorrect password entry or if a password is not entered within a specified time.

Also does video and/or audio recording.

See sig.

Wow, this is great! It seems like the perfect solution. Of course, I don't have Windows right now, so I can't actually try it out
