the xmdirect will turn on if both pins 6 and 7 are shorted and fed 12v and you send it the magic bytes

well are you running direct serial or through a USB to serial adapter?
if you are seeing S and R that means your cable is wired correctly and your XMD is running
you might just have a cable shielding problem
you need to make sure that the shield is grounded at both ends

also keep in mind that it will have trouble bringing up channel list if it doesnt have a good sat signal level, it wont work if you just have ground repeater signal. I have even had to activate some to get the channels to come up

you just tried it
the programs are not going to recognize it persay, they are just going to bring back the channel list if they can
if the XMD is getting good signal and is activated the test program will bring back a channel list

the other thing you might try is make sure that in the device manager that windows didnt find the XMD as a serial mouse

I ordered a cable a few weeks ago, and ran into the shorting problem that other people are seeing. When I checked the cable, it seems like it was wired up in a "mirror image" compared to the diagram on the first page.
Are the pins on the DIN numbered as if you are looking at the front of the plug, or from behind?
Thanks
