OEM GPS Modules.
Anyone using OEM gps modules ? Garmin 15L
I just installed this in my case, plus put the antenna which is no bigger than my thumbnail on the roof. This little guy is super small (I'll try and get pics) & has a strong magnet. This is at least two times smaller than any GPS mouse I've ever had, plus it's WAAS capable. I tested to see if it was working using this great tool:
GPS testing software
(at the bottom of the page download: GPS Diagnostics)
This tool auto detects the GPS unit if you don't know which COM port. Basically I took the pigtail and connected it to my Via Epia's Extra 'internal' COM port or COM2. Then I mounted the OEM GPS in my case and used the tool with the machine booted and it got lock, bam OEM GPS..
The benefits ?? Well read the stats on this little module, low power (3.3v) WAAS capable and faster lock times..

Looks interesting. How much was it and where did you get it from? Does the antenna just sit on top of your roof, or is it mounted inside the car?

Yep, I've been using a Garmin GPS25 for about 3 years now, it's a 5v device but quite similar to yours. If Iwas buying a GPS again I would go for the one you have, they just feel more like you 'made' them than those boring mice you just plug into a USB port!

Whole setup
The whole setup cost about 135.00 but really blows away a USB GPS mouse. These GPS mods were designed for system developers and advanced GPS applications.
If your looking for a completely "embedded" CarPc then this would be the way to go, its great to hear from others that are using this hardware...
I think the things I like about it most is that, I'm not using up a USB port I'm using up only 3.3v to power it up, it's smaller than any other GPS device (.75 * .5 * .5) L x W x H and its more capable than the normal USB devices you can buy.

That's exactly why I went down that route, I want to keep it as embedded and as "stock" as possible.
My car (SAAB 9-5 Aero) got a stock "sharkfin" GSM/GPS antenna I intend on using.
Since most motherboards have an serial port header on the board itself you don't have to make any external connections.

I myself am running the Garmin 15H unit 8-40v or something like that. Works great and definitely recommend it. My only complaint is that it looses satelite lock very easily despite have a strong lock under foilage. But I think I narrowed it down to a poor shielding antenna cable. Will be changing that setup soon. Whats the performance like for you? Just wanna be sure its only me and not others in the same boat.

Im a little confuse here, From the pic I see, how would this mount in the case? Can I mount it some where in the trunk/anywhere, Does a M10K have an "internal" serial port? and how are you getting 3.3v in the car?
thanks

yes the m10k has an internal serial port
3.3v comes off the ATX power supply

I was looking through the documentation and this looks like it is the proper wiring config for the unit.
on another note, where can you buy these units?

WAAS works by using a geostationary satelite to correct your position and give greater accuracy, the problem is that it is stationed above the United States!
We will have our own version soon as the European Space Agency is going to position one above mainland europe. The standard for this is called EGNOS and will be compatible with WAAS although you may need a firmware update.
