I installed one last week and I'm very impressed ....

After bending a pin on my Earthmate cable it became very unreliable so I bit the bullet and bought the OEM 15L-W from MegaGPS.com plus this antenna from Ebay:
http://cm.ebay.com/cm/ck/1065-29392-...tem=5810468863
Total spent including shipping:
OEM $88.72
Antenna $24.98
Total $113.70
Installation went very well other than the minor hassle of xp detecting it as a serial mouse, but thanks to earlier posts I was able to fix that quickly. I used a serial header cable and an extra audio cable tha I had laying around to wire up the OEM. The soldering the wires was very easy. I used some double sided foam sticky tape to stick the OEM to the side of my unoccupied PCI slot on my Epia M10K. I have a truck so I routed the antenna through the third brake light-I've seen this done alot with XM/Sirius installs. Very easy installation all the way around. The GPS module performs so much better than my Earthmate. I'm getting a constant 9 satellite lock. With the Earthmate I don't remember getting more than 6. I would absolutely reccomend this for anyone looking for a GPS module for their install. I'll take some pictures when I have the camera out again.
Rick

Response.

Thanks to all that have contributed information. I agree with Rick, this setup is recommended and again much more stable.

hmm, but i wonder if that oem gps performance is similar to say the garmin unit for 85 bucks or whatever. im thinking you will need to make that little battery backup PCB thing, shown in someones picture above. hmm, whats peoples experience with the performance of various oem units?

ive searched a few times, but most people are using dongles.

.

Garmin 15L & H models seem to be the most reliable / accurate (depending on the antenna placement)

currently i have my usb mouse under the dash of my car attached to an air vent. it probably averages about 5-7 sats the most was 9 and only if im in the city with tall buildings itll drop to 2 sats or less. if i were to put the antenna in this same location, would it do any better? or should i find a different spot? say in the windshield cowel where the wipers go.
