FYI - I read an article less than a month ago that some law enforcement dept. served West Coast Custom's with a hefty fine for advertising that they could put the LCD in a steering wheel by removing the airbag. Just an FYI.

yea, that's what I ment about the liability issues being a limiting factor in marketing something like this..........., wcc should have had those "warning, this is for off road show use only, & is not intended for use on public roads" disclaimer plastered all over everything, from there advertizing to there actual final invoices! I do some custom modifications on customers cars from time to time, but I always cover my *** with the invoice clearly stating the intended use crap, & they sign it..... wasn't me

it's 1.8" from hongkong,it's o.k. for video but really small, navigation or something like that sucks on it, but it will display it pretty good, I like these for aux camera feeds....there also not extremely bright.............

I could see this being a huge problem for people that normally have they horn switch in the center of the stearing wheel. Are these keyboards going to be "punch" proof?
I nominate this for the "most brilliant yet dumbest at the same time" mod of the year award.
Huge props on creativity.

that's got me ****in' in my pants...well at least it's an award, woo hoo, I got an unofficial mp3car.com trophy!!!!
I guess I can see how this could be considered stupid as far as normal goes, but I never considered myself too normal , actually if I belive what I'm sometimes told, I guess I'm not normal, I don't think I would even WANT to be normal all the time
I happen to think this wheel is pretty cool, there are going to be blue lcd's projecting down on the keys at night with a soft glow, but there wil be a mercury switch to deactivate them when the wheel turns past say 45 deg. so you don't get blinded when the wheel goes upside down. I also had the idea of building a leather cover for the keyboard area, kinda like an airbag cover, but i know that even if I did, it would just roll around in my trunk most of the time.
since you guys are very eager to point out what you see as stupid, would you take a look at another project that I'm about to start. if you think it's stupid let me know, but at least tell me what's stupid about that one, this one I guess I understand the stupid part a little if you look at it from a practical point of view, but trust me, when it comes to WOW factor, this wheel is pretty sick in person....

I started to build this wheel maybe a year & a half ago, I wish I waited for the newest bluetooth keyboards, as these would be very easy to build into a steering wheel.......I may build another one with the bluetooth board eventually.......but I've got to find the time to finish my already started projects first............

I had it in my privious car for about a month after I got it working the way you see it here, & then pulled it back out to finish up the cosmetics & lcd install, but have since stoppped driving that car & got an 02 minivan, I'm not to sure that I will ever put this wheel in the 02 minivan though.........so it may not be finished for a while...........
when it was in the car it worked flawlessly. I was concerned about inadvertantly pressing keys or worse, like accidently popping a key out, but she performed flawlessly, you kinda forgot it was there unless you looked down at it, not intrusive at all. the multimedia keys along the top were sorely missed when I took it back out, they were really useful.......
the car this will probably wind up in is a 83 caddy coupe with a tilt nose & a grand national drivetrain (turbocad6) its basically a showcar/toy type of car..........this wheel will look alot less stupid in that car anyway when I get around to bringing that car back out I will have to upgrade the whole pc in that car anyway, it is EXTREMELY old as far as pc installs go, it was originally installed around 1994, it is a 486dx4 75mhz......it didn't have usb, I used an isa card with multiple serial inputs, the thing looked like an octopus, when I dig it out I'll post pictures for a laugh........

That is trully show-off of insanity. Quit smoking man... otherwise I have no explanation. I cannot even imagine using keyboard while driving. Not to mention the safety of such madness. Who might want to have QWERTZ printed in face anyway?
But who cares when you are on heroine...
I still root to your project anyway.

I think its pretty kewl... I dont know about having a keyboard in the steering wheel but I planned on putting a monitor there... 7" widescreen... I even removed and sold my airbags from my '00 Vehicross to make space... now I have purchased ANOTHER Vehicross and so I plan to just do in-dash and backseat monitors... I'm not a fan of airbags anyway, so its not a loss... anyway... kewl idea!
