XM Direct Problems

I have an XMDirect and a homemade cable. When I plug this into the computer, is a new COM device supposed to show up in Device Manager? The reason I ask is because only one COM device shows up in Device Manager whether or not I have the XMD plugged in. When I tell an app to use that port to connect to the XMD, it says the port is already open or in use. I've tried switching the port number but still no luck. None of the XM applications I've tried have worked succesfully either...I've tried Frodo's XMTest and that just sits there with a blank screen.

Wow, you genius must be contagious or something. I had thought it was weird that the COM port was already in use but I didn't think anything else of it. Right after I read you post I started thinking what could possibly be taking up a serial port. Then it hit me...ActiveSync! I disabled serial syncing on ActiveSync and it started working immediately.
