xm cable shorting powersupply

I recently made a cable for my xmdirect.. it plugs in the serial port fine, and it plugs into the power connector fine.. but once I plug the cable into my XMD, the powersupply completely shuts down for like 30 seconds... I used a multimeter to match up the wires to the pins, and then I even double checked them after making my cable and they all seem to right...

what else could I possibly be checking?

you must have something shorted, thats the only way it will cause the power supply to shutdown. Are you sure you wired it the correct way? Because I know I always get confused when i'm looking at the pinouts I always seem to get them backwards

Did you use a mac printer cable or did you buy the din connector?

I went out and bought a new mac printer cable... I checked the pinouts a couple of times.. perhaps I will again... my cable did have 10 wires including the sheilding which I thought was weird...

you have 10 wires wired up, or there was 10 wires inside the cable?

there are 9 wires inside the cable, plus the sheilding... but there are only 8pins on the minidin connector.. weird huh? I only had 6 wires wired up though

i've found that in some of those cables that they have one wire that is tied to the shield

I had the issue one two different powersupplies.. However I do see why the problem would relate to the powersuppply when they are both in good working condition...?

I have a Carnetix P1900 and noticed that if I plug in the XM direct unit while the computer is on, the power supply shuts off. But I can turn it back on once its plugged in. However it draws too much current and the PS shuts down to protect itself. Just curious if you have the same PS. I believe these XM direct units are drawing a considerable amount of power.

I tried only plugging the power cable in (and not the serial cable into the computer) and the xm radio started smoking... burnt up a resister on the inside

I dont know what the problem is.. I checked and double checked the pinouts and compared to the schematics serveral times... something is ****ed

I too made a cable following the instructions on this sight and have the same problem.

If the PC is powered up and I go to plug in the serial cable the PC will reboot. It reboots just fine. I don't think it is working though because it doesn't find a serial mouse of any device connected to the serial port.

I double and triple checked the wiring and all seems fine. Don't know why it reboots like that.

i've had that happen before, sometimes the inital power draw of the unit is high, will cause my opus 150 to restart, I just make sure not to plug the XMD in while the psu is running.

Is Pin 3 and Pin 8 on the mini din connector supposed to be connected when the cable is plugged in?

When the cable is totally unplugged there is no continuity through these pins. When I connected both the power cord and the serial connector in the MB then the two pins have continuity. The PC is off when doing this.

****It's working. It just doesn't like to be plugged in while the PC is running.
