Some cars have three positions at the steering column lock. The first is usually ACC, and when selected power is given to the "ACCessories", like the stereo, the heater fan etc. the second position is called "RUN", and when it is selected, appart from the accessories, power is also given to all the circuits that are needed for the engine to run (ignition etc.). Finally there is the "START" position, which when selected makes the starter motor kick in.

So, the ACC, is a power source that is powered when the key is at the ACC position.

You can use just about any small NPN transistor. I have used a PN2222A. You could use 2N2222, 2N3904, BC547 or a hundred other small signal transistors

Problem with the circuit

Hi i did this 4 times and the 4th time it worked, I've used equivalent values for the t2 which is bc548 & ic is c358c and i changed the r6 39k to a 1k and the 1.2 to 2.2k as per the circuits pcb board thanks for it but please next time put the correct values as it has been giving me head ache to get this done thanks again.

First a little background...I do automotive wiring repairs and electrical component installation, alarms, stereos, fog lamps etc...so this is my first attempt at building this dimmer, my current client wants this in his car...so here I am and plan on sticking around here cuz you guys know your stuff.

I just bought all the parts to build the dimmer, and was wondering why the 8 pin switch is not in the diagram...is the diagram an up dated version?..my parts were purchased by the parts listed on the diagram...just before checkout I did not see this part...also want to thank the guy who designed this, just wish there was a simpler way to do this
