What I mean is that SPDIF and Serial Port are completely independant :
- You can first wire the serial port, MAX chip, transistor, etc to pins 13 and 14, start the software, then the head unit, and check that you can then change source to CD changer and see the head unit display "TR1 CD1"
- If that works, then you can wire pins 18/19 to a SPDIF source and check that it works too and that you can hear sound through the Head Unit.
Oh, thanks a lot, now is more clear I will try soon as possible.

About SPDIF...
http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/pcm2902.pdf
PCM2902 (only 02 the 00 series no SPDIF) also used for headphones from the USB port but now i see that support conversion from analog to digital (spdif).
What do you think about this DAC?
pep
p.s. also tried AK5340 but poor result..

I have no experience but googling around shows interesing results such as this project and this thread.
It might be a very interesting device, providing both analog input (for use as a stand alone device) and USB input (for use as a PC interface for PC's that don't have SPDIF out)...
Only thing that scares me is soldering SMD components by hand...
Edit : Bad review : "This circuit 2902 is bull **** [...] I will not recommand this circuit, for the spdif to USb interface netheir as ADC to USB". Although, we would use it the opposite way USB > SPDIF or ADC > SPDIF instead...

me too :-(
I've found this 2902 (3 pieces) in my old DVD player (broken of course) one of these is directly linked (with the usual caps) in the SPDIF plug, the other one works like RCA Analog Input and the last one like RCA ANALOG output, and everything works without any USB connection (perhaps some emulation??).

Oh, yes, I admit I hadn't read the spec fully. It looks more like a anyhting-to-USB + USB-to-anything chip than a anything-to-anything, and it clearly states "To get the appropriate operation, one of the following operating systems must be working on the host PC...". So it won't work as a simple standalone Analog>SPDIF
As for your DVD, maybe it had a linux kernel inside... it has been reported as working with Linux on the discussion thread mentioned above.

No kernel inside, it's controlled by an atmel MCU (+512Kbyts EEPROM) with some buffer, mpeg2 decoder, ide controller (for the dvd) and pcm2902 for output/input signal.
if it had been a kernel linux inside, I would have already used it.

No idea then...

If you're after an usb->spdif adapter (like me), I bet you could find a complete one cheaper than the cost of the components.

Factor in the case, the connector, the circuit board, other passive components and the time.
A local chain has an usb sound card for 10€ (actually 9.99, VAT included), I'm not sure it has spdif output but I'd be very surprised if it hasn't.
However, does anybody qualifies for free samples? (I don't want to register only to find that I don't)
Edit: ok, bugmenot to the rescue.

portable DVD
I have a new idea, what do you think about connecting a portable DVD player, that play also MP3, have coaxial SPDIF output, and without the screen the cost go down at 59€!!! Amstrad DNX300 has also input USB for your MP3 key!! (not if you already have a Car PC)

Yes, I know, I know...

That's cheap indeed ! Do you have a link to such devices ? Not that I'm interested myself, but I've got many questions of people who came across the project and don't have SPDIF out.

Yes, like on most major electronic components sites, anybody qualifies I think. I just filled in my personal data and my company name, but I doubt they make any check on the company existence or activity. I guess it wouldn't be worth the work for two 4.5$ chips (street price - they have it at no cost).
Anyway, I always try to sound the most professional possible : don't use a hotmail e-mail (if possible use one that matches the company name), give your company street address if possible, etc.
But a few years ago, I remember having received tons of components and books from TI at my personal address while I didn't have a job or company name. My mother was upset because the postman always rang at the door because the books were too large for the mailbox :-)
BTW, how do you think I got the MAX3232 ? :-)

Well, if you use a fake account with fake personal data, don't be surprised if they send the samples to a fake address ! :-)

Everything's possible, once you jave an input.
Well, I mean, as soon as you have a PIC to fake the CDC in that case...

I can give a link to the chain homepage, and to the category (go straight here if you want to avoid the flash nonsense on the homepage) . The 9.90 one is the "connection 5.1 usb", unfortunately it's a no name brand and a web search is useless, so I cannot be sure it has spdif output, but since most other "5.1 usb" have it, and I suspect they all use chips from the same OEM (the first hit on google searching for the Xear 3D software, all its chips have spdif output), I'd be very surprised if it lacks it. Once I made my interface and it works I'll investigate further (if it doesn't I don't need an usb sound card).

That was just to check the site and read the FAQ.

HI pippolippi,
one week ago I've bought in the "Carrefour MegaSupermarket(i think you know)" two Xear3D (with SPDIF out) based on cmedia driver , very poor quality but the price 12 euro it's good.
bye
