Boost Gauge
I wanted to either find for purchase, or design and build, a boost gauge for my car, so rather than having a gauge sit somewhere on the dash, I could have the readout on my screen.
I know Phidgets has a PSIG meter which you can use with an API setup. Does anyone else know of other solutions or somewhere to purchase something pre-made?
I just need 0-20psi.

Why not use OBDII?

You can't get boost pressure through ODBII. You would need a proprietary protocol that is car specific to be able to read boost.

I think I'd personally go with the Phidgits option. You'd need to build yourself a front-end for it, but at least you wouldn't have to worry about drivers and all that.
BTW, what kinda car? Being a gear-head, I'm just curious.

Can't use OBDII for the reason he said above, plus, the car doesn't come stock with any boost devices

you could use a regular boost gauge and have a shaft encoder on it to the PC. Or look for a pressure transducer. quite easy really but the former is easier to calibrate in a way.

Take this article from Audi world and work from there http://www.audiworld.com/tech/elec94.shtml
Also boost data via OBDII is going to be way to slow to be useful.

optical ones have no drag.

haha love it.
the other option is a pressure transducer. Honeywell do some with RS232 interfaces but all you need is to interpret the signal - probably resistance which you can do with most I/O boards, phidgets, joystick port etc etc
hell you could always take the optical enocder out of a mouse scroll wheel or off the ball and use that!!!!

Might as well use a pressure sensor such as MPX4250AP, changing output voltage with pressure, cost about $20.
Amplify the voltage (if needed) and send the measured pressure to PC, use serial or USB, easily done with PIC MCUs.
