Well, the HUD part itself is easy. The HUD glass linked earlier works fine, I'd imagine there are many that would work, including clear plastic. It's the focusing that's a problem at the moment.
But if you were to ignore that, it's really as easy as putting an lcd on your dash, put some 3m privacy filter on it to hide it and so it doesnt' distract you (or the cops) and you're done.
Though sunshine on it all day is probably really bad for the LCD.

Regarding those samples from holo-whatever, I got some too. They have potential, I was tinkering around with them and my LCD projector.
Possibilities...rear projection HUD, or even better, TS.

but is v. interesting stuff once in production then the cost of the unit is expected to rapidly decline.
But is a long way off..

Yeah, people have tried that, at least a little. The big thing is this.
How do you front project something on to a reflective surface and not see the source. It's like shining a flashlight at a window and only wanting to see the projected light, not the flashlight itself.
Maybe it just needs a bigger fresnel, closer to the source so there is less disparity between the projected and viewed image, meaning you can still see the projected image, but if it's almost the same exact size as the focused image, I'd imagine you'd notice it much less.
There are a few things I've been meaning to try, just haven't had the time with trying to finish up redoing my leather interior install, carpc, front-end software, and dozen other things that need to be done. Oh yeah, and work
Another viable options is to just get a bigger LCD, and just reflect it off the collimnator like in the first tests. Yeah, it won't be focused, but OTOH, it's no different than looking down at your gauges and refocusing like almost every driver in the world does now.

yev, do you think you can send me a piece of holo screen? I want to play a little with it too. I called them at the beginning of the year, but i don't have insiders like you do .
Alti, how did your mechanism work?
Shotgun, did the polarizing film idea work well in the car? BTW, i added to my nitemax review my findings wiht the color nitemaxes. Try black and white, it will give you less halos.
Quantum, do you know of anything that that is pretty transperant and polarizes or no?

I actually haven't tried polarizing film yet. I've been meaning to, but haven't gotten around to it. The only film I've used was the privacy film to hide the LCD itself from your eyes and for that, it works great.

Yev, i looked at the link you gave me,and that seriously does look pretty cool. I sat and wondered how many super bright LEDs it would take to get that same effect because then there'd be no need for a fan. I'm going to use the LCDs mark provided me. I have to purchase an Svid to RCA adapter so i'll get that when i get my DVI to VGA adapter.

i think regular 21 led bulb will workout because led is a directional light, which is what you need, you might want to add a small polarzed lens/screen as well to get more even brightness, i would go with the small fan anyway just in case, led is awesome, cause it could last longer than the car will.
i mailed 5 screen samples today, i doubt you may found a use for them though, i would just go with some tint that way you will have perfect fitment on windshield, and projection. it will blockout some of the bright incoming beams, and keep picture somewhat visible., and totally visible in the darkness.
I don't think you sohuld worry about dvi/vga/s-video/rca, since it it will be projected small, you will have s video/rca from the rear/front camera
and you can get this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/New-VGA-to-TV-CO...QQcmdZViewItem
if you want to project actual gps map on your windshield, i know vga is perfect, but i don't think quality will matter much in such case

BTW, also projection distance wouldn't be that great, so i don't think you might need to use anything extreme
