If i'm following you correctly, right idea, wrong technology. EXCELLENT find though. This company specialized in IR motion tracking in 3D space. This is good as a HUD touchscreen replacement. Its Minority Report realized. See, its IR based, making it good to make...well..a "driving glove" with a shiny dot on a finger tip. Actually, the better model suited is here
http://www.naturalpoint.com/smartnav..._overview.html
Using a finger and "dwell" you can select whatever you want. I guess i can finally ebay my P5... Now i know what i want for Christmas

And yes, this would be VERY dangerous to use when driving. If you have the dot on your head, turning around could be dangerous. Using the finger is better, but still, unless you're highway driving, i woudlnt' recoomend it.

Once again, an excellent find.

To all others, sorry for being so silent. I'm putting the project on hold for anSBC i recently got. See, if i do this right, i can project an image form a 12.1" laptop screen, provided it has an LVDS connection. Also, it will then give me on board triple monitor display with another 2x VGA. Sure, its 2-8MB, but honestly, all i need it for is DVD movies in the car, right? I'm also trying to get my hands on a 4 montior PCI video card. LOL...don't ask me what i plan to do with that.

If anyone has an LVDS monitor that they want to sell with the inverter and such, please let me know. I will be posting a WTB ad once i get the SBC itself up and working. Al;so, if anyone can give me real time help with this SBC/LVDS (never did it before, need someone to hold my hand) that would be cool too! Yes, i am already in contact with motorcity

lol yup. And several military/security versions as well. Honesty, i think the reason why we're not done is the dash fab nccessary and the other cool projects we'd rather do THAN a dash fab

If anyone else, like, idunno, soon to be married thread starter ALTI wants to shwo us where he is, let me know lol. There are other pics in this thread though. Mine just are the crappiest , but were only taken to show proof of concept and the idea. I think page 3 or 5 is when most of the pics are taken

As Genesisfactor said, the biggest problem is the dash fabrication needed. Basically since my dash is one piece, I will have to completely alter it and cripple my resale value. That said, I just went back to the drawing board on this project after a long time of inactivity.

You could do what I did, get a spare dash off of ebay cheap. I've got at least one extra of my entire interior. I was hoping to get back on this last weekend, but I ended up breaking my hand so it's off for a bit again.

@shotgun: Sorry to hear for the arm! Hope it heals fast!

Good idea about eBay but i could not find ANY grand Cherokee dashes in there and i guess since it such a BIG piece (the hole front side of the car's interior!) it would still cost a considerable amount of money... Never the less I am still considering cutting it up hehehe. An other option i am considering is putting it under the trim that hides the front speakers.

Thanks. I hope so too.

My shopping experience is that it works best when you don't need em. I scan ebay a lot and buy stuff when it's cheap, regardless if I need it or not. I inevitably do. My dash was the same way, I think I paid $200 but it also came with everything on it including a speedo, about $1500 worth of parts all together.

Cherokees should be 100x more common than mine so I would think you wouldn't have to wait too long.

ahem to that. I did the same thing. its just prudent planning, you know? Its not overkill when you need it and its there, and its not wasteful spending if you buy it cheap and need to use it or can sell it for so much more (had to do that a few times)!

Its so sad, i'm turning into a geek. I'm buying a car based on its compatibility with my computer!!! !

PROJECT update...i have 3 ibooks being shipped to me. One will be my LVDS screen. I'm hoping that 14.1" is enough to get this image to a NICE size No magnification needed .

Hopefully i'll be done with this SBC in a month or tow. At this rate, its incredibly feasible. Right now, i need a 1ghz or high socket 370 Coppermine processor with a 100Mhz bus speed (the board is 100 Mhz). The higher the L2 cache, the better. I have a 533 P3 with a 512K L2 cache and its looking mighty good right now, but I need more speed if i'm goign to be running the apps i'm thinking about!

only when you room to store all that crapola, in my case i am in condo, even if i rent out a garage somewhere in chicago, i still would not have enough room to store 1 time use crap
