For all you people, that struggled so hard to get this done...
Sorry for my stupid idea, it comes from mistake somehow...
It would not be possible for you to use as a "reflection layer" inside the winshield a "ripped off" autodim mirror? It can be used combined with the polarized filter if needed ...
I bought one autodim mirror to replace my normal mirror (Forester) and i see that you can turn it real dark, meaning near to black...
Now, if one of you will be able to take apart the reflective layer on the back of the glass, you will have a screen that gets darker or cristal clear , as you wish by simply controlling the voltage applied to it.
Just an idea, don't shoot me...but for $ that i paid for mine on ebay (a big one from a Nissan Patrol), i think it is not so big deal to try...

*cocks gun* another smart @$$ noob...
kidding. I can kinda picture what you're talking about but i am not overtly farmiliar with the inards of the autodimming mirror. If you can take pics or actually try, i'll be interested in seeing it . Thanks man for your input!

Actually i am just ordering another autodim mirror on ebay now. I cannot afford to ruin mine, because i like it too much it's big.
Also, my nitemax camera is on the way, but before that i will use a small p&s camera (cause of it's display) for testing... I will get back when i will know for sure..so i will not disturb you for nothing.

you're way too humble man lol. We're a friendly bunch. Report back yoru findings . I'm just trying to get DSL (damn small linux) working on my comptuer as well as power up this P4 board. Then LVDS cable, buy a little goodness, and see where we're at. Just make sure you know how these things work, okay? I don't like wasting money, as i'm sure you don't either . Okay, yes i do . mugurg, welcome to the project (as if you needed my permission)

Genessis, i am burried in my K8055 now just came today, and you can imagine i am like a child with his christmass gift.
The preliminary tests done with my mirror were more than promissing. Example: with autodim set to off, you can't see the glas at all... Hopefully i will be able post some pictures, if my nitemax arrive soon. Otherwise i will rip my mini camera , Minolta X20.

pleasure to meet you. NY, USA, born in trinidad.
Main job- robotic engineer; secondary- computer guy; teritary, model. currently defunk due to accident
interests- if it computes, moves, explodes, or makes other things explode, its good stuff in my book. And women...esp one in particualr. I have a champion pure bred fox terrirer (uncle raises champions back in trini and i happened to pick his best dog ever for at puppy) and a champon bred golden retriever (for your dog side to enjoy).
Back to the elecctric tint, have you researched it yet? i do not think its a chromatic shift due to an electric current. I'llh have to see. Could easily be wrong . getting a new gun today so i'm gonna have to ut getting that cable on hold ofr a while

 Happy to meet you all.
Ontopic:
The mirror is definitely electrical controlled. a photoelement detects the light source from behind your car, then an electrical voltage proportional is sent to the mirror. A special liquid seems to be "interested" in this curent and goes darker and darker till black..
It does not work if not powered with 12V.

intersting. I think i can fill in the hoels from there. the electrosenstive chemcial is kinda liek what they use in calculators and there's polarization and blah blha blah. I like your idea alot. let's see where this goes. Maybe we can get a shet of it.
Just also understand that 5% tint may possibly work the same lol.

I think you are more than right. The principle seems to be also a liquid polarisation, but the effect is dramatical. A strong (100W) light applied to the photoresistor makes the mirror reflects just the inside wolfram of the bulb, like a thin red wire... nothing else...That dark became..
No idea if my idea will work, but definitelly worth some bucks for a big (used) autodim mirror...Since you are in US, it is more than easy to buy one from ebay. Being in Romania it's a whole adventure to do this...

lol, yeah i researched it a whiel back. i just needed something a little bigger. Its a GREAT idea if we can find a big enough banel. i mean, its jsut a liquid crystal display. what i wonder is this- LCDs for the computer themselves, i BELIEVE, are see through and they need a backlight for thier display. I will have to check my info on that. It would be nice to just turn it on and have it show gra to white. I dunno, i'm starting to doubt myself. Anyways, i'll leave that to someone who knows. Enough speculation with fragmented memories of past research . I will check out this auto dimmer thing after christmas.
Oh, remember, the basic mirror has a reflective siver lining behind it. make sure the display IS see through. if you wiki rear view mirrors, you'll see there's a darker lined optic if you il it for night viewing. If the polarized liquid is still there, all it may do is just be a silvery liquid color when not enregize and get darker when energized, like a calculator screen. THen you're have to square one because you can't see through it at all.
visit a junk yard or something or a car that's being parted out and take the mirror apart and see.
