The one i have actually has a ordinary mirror behind this "glass"
The glass gets darker regardless if the mirror is there or not...
A good place for you to buy a HUGE mirror if the idea turns to be good:
A modern Mercedes, Volvo, etc. bus "side mirror". Those are huge...

Mirrors are probably going to be too small.

The name of the material is "electrochromatic glass", it's a liquid crystal layer in between the layers. I know on my type of car, when the mirror glass goes, it usually is in a form of blueish junk leaking out.

I'm pretty sure you couldn't cut it. A good bet would be the mirrors of a luxury suv (navigators), some of them have it, whether you can remove the silver layer, no idea.

Are you looking to use this for projecting the hud on?

I will have to check my info on that. It would be nice to just turn it on and have it show gra to white. I dunno, i'm starting to doubt myself. Anyways, i'll leave that to someone who knows. Enough speculation with fragmented memories of past research. I will check out this auto dimmer thing after christmas.

a stripped lcd is translucent. i thought lcds were transperant too.

pssshh, bring us a pizza, damn it, we hungry!

I'm not sure abotu restarted a topic, as its nto done yet, other than someoen had some input.

Speaking of which

LCDs are clear. NiteMaxMark, gave me a crash course in the construction of them and they are clear with opaque backing, if no backlight, and transluscent backing, if backlight. That backing is removable as it is glued on.

As per using it as electrochromatic glass...not sure how safe that would be. I leave that to your pioneering spirit, mug

Yev, Congrats on saving for two semsters of university. Take that money, put it in a high yield fund that has been doing well and take out student loans/grants. Continue saving and adding to the fund. by the time you graduate, you'll have enough to get rid of about half your loans or a nice nestegg to do what you need to do in terms of getting a place and stuff after college.

I'm just off out, so don't have much time to talk about this, just wanted to jot the idea down while it was still in my head!

I got a new welder for chrimbo, which hit me with the idea about using the auto-darkening glass they use for welding helmets. Should cut down on headlight glare I would have thought? Any thoughts?

what's the reaction rate of the glass. ee, with one of mark's lenses that i got, it had aan iris feature that was pretty interesting. If you look at a monitor with with the nitemax, it appears white...hoooweeevverrrr, using the iris, i was able to limit the light so enough that i was able to see the images on the monitor.

I think the thing that is needed is a user controlable electirc iris with a photocell or maybe just computer vision software to find a halo, and limit the light input for a clear picture. It can be done.

Also, i think the color nitemaxes are more susceptable to the halo effect because its, well, color. The B&W ones get it, but tis nto as noticable unless the chip thinks its darker out than it is. It actually took it a few minutes for me to get a halo effect since i started out on a brihgt street, went to a dark one, and then went to a really bright one.

Very interesting thread. Keep up the good work guys...
I'm also thinking of playing with HUD display (I'm currently having it only for navigation, from a PPC), so i'll start reading from page 1.

Well, FYI i never gave up the project, i have been working on the projector unit, that would go indash using nitemax screen.

I was an idiot, and left it on unsecured place, and my little sister knock it down. sorry no pics i have been developing the darn thing for a month with cutom aluminum case.

the reason i am writing this is because i have found a solution , maybe some of you members already know about this product, but this thing looks great

it's a mitsubishi pocket projector pk-10, they have discountinued that model because they went with pk-20 which is twice as much, the pk 10 i am going to pick up fon ebay for 475.00 free shipping.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...2562978&rd=1,1

i guess you want to see the link eh, oh yeah the pocket projector is DLP capagle projecting 60 inch screen, and using high intesity LED, as a bulb, which last up to 20k hours, and it comes with the battery which last for 2 hours, with VGA, and video ports

well here it goes
http://www.mitsubishi-presentations....tors/PK20.html

the link is for pk20 that an 800 dollar unit pk 10 is similar with less brighteness for twice less, and i believe is being discontinued

i will be getting one soon, and install it as well, i am thinking something like aluminum slide in bracket( gutting down a old cd rom drive), and cut a hole in my dashboard behind the speedometer, i am thinking tinting my windshield 50% anyway to get rid of double image, but i am sure you could get a strip of polarized film, that you could attach to the windshield to prevent double image

hey yev. I'm just going to say, have a good cooling system in that dash man. . I spent a bulk of the time trying to learn photometry, trying to see how the LCD i am using compares to that projector, but after SR, my brain got fried, and that's the key for me finding out the ratio of lumens to nits.

F=cd*sr/m^2 F= lumens, cd/m^2= nits, cd*sr= F

According to Da-Lite, you only need 300-400 lumens to light up a windshield satisfactorily. Just rememeber that

Anyways, my only thing is that you just make sure no one can see it when lit.

In other news...

I have not abondoned the project myself, just playing around with a few things, like 3D desktops and what not, like Project Looking Glass, and Sphere XP. I wanted a nice 3D HUD when i got this running in whatever i get--Which brings me to my next point:From the 15-18th, i'll be in the hospital for a vid EEG. No internet or whatever, hell i can't leave the bed but for bathroom emergencies. The findings will hopefully determine what's wrong and HOPEFULLY get me back in the driver's seat so i can FINALLY get my car. Please keep my in prayer.

i'm surprised that alti or shutgun hasn't beaten us to this. I'm phasing into another interim project that has drained my money. lol oh well. But tis why i have all those SBCs that i just sold.

Anyways, good luck!!

ya, I kinda dropped the ball on this after getting married. I kinda did a mental assessment of all of the projects that I was working on and desided that I had to make some cuts. Since cutting such a big hole in the dash of my only car seemed like the path of the most time, resistance and cost, this one got the axe

I got it working in my car on the computer screen, but no HUD. Good luck!
