One problem I see for some people (like myself) with just putting film on the window is the shape of the windshield. Mine curves quite a bit and would cause a lot of distortion.

If a beamsplitter is used "backwards" it should combine the two images, resulting in a HUD that is transparent, yet reflective
now looking for a coating for those of us with a (relatively) flat windshield

Ever seen a Corvette windshield? They're ridiculously curved.

curve can be compensated for with a cylindrical lens/mirror
edit: still looking for coatings

No doubt that it could be compensated for, but I'm willing to bet that the cost and practicalliy would be prohibitive.
Not familar with the Corvette's setup, but with character based LCDs, distortion isn't that big of an issue. If you use individual segments, would be pretty easy to place them such they account for the distortion somewhat.
With a graphical hud, it's going to be very noticable. Designing an optic to account for the windshield shape at a given distance I would imagine would be tough by itself. Then you have to have someone actually produce it, at one off costs, sure it would be expensive.

if u use a polarized film on the windshield u have no ghosting and no double image. Unfortunately until now i was not able to find a clear polarized filter in a form of a film. All are kind of dark. I am trying to find the ones used on LCDs...

How about this?
Polarizer Experimenters Kit
Small but cheap and good for testing.

unfortunately, all polarizing films will be dark(ish) the lighter they are, the less effective at polarizing they will be.
