I said I'd unsubscribed, but I came back after seeing some new posts and the discussion is more interesting... so beat me with a ****ty stick!
Insurance reductions wise, they would require a proven tamper proof solution. This is very unlikely, and my opinion the end of that story! I'm very much into creating a product however that would continously film to disk the last X minutes. when you click a button, it saves the X mins along with the next Y minutes. The benefit? I've been cheated of insurance through fake witnesses, and thus my premium was raised. Having evidence of fault is another ballpark all together. I'd also like to use it if I see someone else having an accident/commiting a crime, then I could provide hard evidence too. I'm not an activist, but I certainly do not encourage crime and people gettin away with hurting others. So I'd do my bit there.
I've already started doing this. I'm building a
carptuer vision library. This reads video. Whilst it's first reading it, I can get this recording business going.
The next part is to process that video to create safety alerts for the driver. Perhaps insurance companies may give discount to those that have these extra safety features in their cars, in the same way that they charge more for people with more dangerous thigns in their cars (like a twin supercharger).
Safeety issues that I think are detectable via computer vision are:
- Bad visiblity spots: a window can be dirty in one part and in overcast weather this can be left unseen, whcih in turn could leave semi-visible areas, especially in the rear view
- Fast moving objects in the read/side views: every drivers should be alerted of close ro fast moving vehicles/objects, espcially if their head is turned the other way. A head being turned is detectable by vision, as are the movememtns of objects relative to the car (this will be one of the toughest challanges I beleive in the software)
The other benefit of computer vision is security. To selectively take action based on inferences from vision. For example, if something enters the car and the keyfob has not been pressed, then to submit everything recorded to an online location. Curently this is not very feasible, but using 3G and the next generation of wireless communications this will be easy.
