Well my first screw up

Well like the title says.
I have completed my fiber glass carputer case so i started the next phase. That was to relocate my faceplate from the main HU. My plan was to place the HU under the back seat. The faceplate is going in a tray up front. Anyways, I tore apart the case on the HU and soldered the wires (2 cat 5 cables)to the pinouts. All looks good so I put everything back and hot glue the wires to the HU where they come out. Next step is to do the same thing on the faceplate. Well, long story short im not sure if my soldered was **** poor or if i had the wrong wire hooked up somewhere. When i turned it on i head what sounded like a steak on the grill.

So yea im ****ed, Brand new, right out of the box unit down the drain.

Any tips or tricks?

Ya, be more carefull Did you see the magic smoke come out?

Sorry to hear that man.

The best thing is to map out, draw out what needs to be done. Pin by pin, color by color, and check it 10 times becfore you apply power. I can't tell you how many times I have gone to power something up, and just as a last ditch effort, check the wiring and find something wrong.

Also, ar you sure you connected postiive and negative of the unit correctly, cause that could cause the same problem.

Also, if you can find the appropriate connectors, that would make things less likely to fry because of solder bridges or other soldering issues.

Yea, i saw the smoke. heard steak, smelt plastic. Well i guess this is just one of things you learn by. Im going to order me another one. I really like this unit to. here is a picture of it.

Maybe ill just use this other one to practice a little more soldering be for tackling the newER one.

Also how long can the wires be between the HU and the faceplate?

That is pretty nice. I like it.

As for the length, it is impossible to tell. If it requires shielding on the some/all the wires, then perhaps not that long, unless they are adequately shielded. There is no way to know with out trying it, though shielding it shouldn't be to hard to accomplish after the fact.

I did the same thing using cat5 cable. I did however use cat5 connectors also to give me the ability to quickly disconnect if any shorts occur.....

2000Jeep:
If you haven't already done your HU modification, here's a tip.
If your unit had a short wire that was conected before the faceplate was affixed to the body, then this is applicable.
Otherwide, not.
Desolder the connectors off the old unit, and use them as an extension lead on the new one.
Easy!

Cable too long or maybe bad soldering somewhere.
