Cool ideas. I too have a serial relay controller, but haven't had time to code anything usefull. Does anyone want to share their software? I realize that it might not work for mine, but I think if we could share, we could come up with something really nice.
Possible frontend plugin?

This sounds interesting, I might want to give this a try later down the road. Just curios but is the VB API a COM DLL?

eh...
Most ppl like the idea, but don't want to hack apart their car's wiring. And then there's ppl that don't have power windows/locks, etc. Like me (my daily driver).
Soon it will come, and everyone will be hacking their wires, just like they're into hacking the dashes now.

i think that the fact that you can even control things from your computer is crazy it doesn't matter what you can do with it. every time you show people what you can turn on and off they will be amazed anyway! i pop my fuel door, door solenoids, rear hatch, neons etc. anything with a switch...

I see no reason to have to hack into your wires. Using those vampire connectors should be fine, as long as you know what you are doing...

Might be a silly and kind of late tip. But as far as I know it shouldn't be too hard to control 4 windows with 4 switches. 2 switches to select wich window (2 bit selector) and 2 switches to make it open or close. You could make it a 3 bit selector and you can even make it possible to select combination of windows. That way you can even controll all windows at once.
Should be easy. I can post a scheme later this day on how to do it. I don't have a relaycard (don't even have a car yet) but I've studied electronics and in my opinion it would be easy to use this idea.

A few people in here are pic basic users, anyone that falls into that catagory who fancys work on a project to build a PIC controlled cellphone conected car alarm email me at:
caralarm@devonkingtravel.co.uk
I'm starting on the software/hardware design stage, have some prelim idea's as I have tried a few ideas already, hardware will be a simple pic and a serial talk phone.
So, if you have a few suitable pics to play with, a way to program them, pbc 2.45, and dont mind using yahoo groups or google, drop me a email.
Its looking so far like this for coms....
cellphone---serial---Pic----USB or serial ---- carpc
As for the alarm side, its simple a few spare input pins on the pic and an output pin to drive a loud horn, pic would also dial you up and/or text you.
I started work on this a year ago, but went onto the relay board, finished that, then my programmer died, now I have a new programmer and I'm off again, but dont fancy doing it all myself.

What about using a window rollup module from a car alarm? DEI has the 530T that will handle up/down for up to 4 windows, and uses a ground trigger to operate.
Here's a link to the manual - http://www.directedstore.com/manuals/530T.pdf

Okay, this is what i have now. You need a secondairy control print that makes you select which window you want to control. And makes you tell it what to do with the window. It consists of a Dual 1 to 4 decoder/demultiplexer to do the window selecting. I use 1 to control the window up event and one for the window down event. When you use the sel1 and sel2 inputs (should be connected to 2 relay outputs on the card thats connected to the PC) to select the window 3 (1 on and 2 off makes window 3 selected) you can use up or down to roll the window up or down. So on this secondairy print you have 8 relays again to control the windows eventually but you only use 4 on the relay card on the PC. I hope my schematic makes any sense.
Keep in mind that this only exists in my mind and as far as I know it should work. Only possible sort of problem is that this circuit expects logic 1 and 0 levels at the inputs. And I have no idea on what values the resistors should be. I also don't know if the transistors are capable of driving the relays but it's just to get you guys going. If you are realy interested I can figure out the values and I could look up the right transistors for this job.
