Wiimote

Now that the Wii Remote can be used with a computer, (http://sourceforge.net/projects/darwiin-remote/) I was thinking it might be applicable in a CarPC. It would be nice if you didn't have a touchscreen, which would cut down on the cost. Anyone have some ideas, and possible upsides/downsides?

yeah, it could kinda work... but not very well (maybe hand guestures, but nothing else) its too bumpy in a car for the accelerometers to work well you will be bouncing around alot

Ahh, true. Didn't think about that part hah, knew I would miss something. Another problem that I was thinking about is that it would probably be a pain to use in that your arm would have to be at an odd angle if you wanted to actually use it to point at the screen. Also It would be irritating to drop and have to find off the ground.

actually you wouldnt need to point it at the screen, since its via bluetooth and they only have programmed the drivers for the accelerometers, it doesnt matter where you point it, just the angle it is at^^

Yeah I meant if you wanted to use it as a pointer, like you can with the console.

I have been thinking about this a little myself. It would be cool to use from a distance. write a script for it to run your media player or something. If you have a good bluetooth dongle you could get some distance.

Using the wiimote to control a front end or what have you probably wouldn't be of much value. The touchscreen is already a pretty evolved interface.

What would be cool however is using the wiimote as an Inertial Reference System (IRS). One would be hard pressed to find a 3 axis accelerometer broadcasting info over bluetooth for less then the price of a wiimote. The accuracy isn't the best, 10% of error according to http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Wiimote, but it should still have some applications.

About what one would actually do with the IRS like capability is still a bit fuzzy. XYZ position history of the vehicle? yaw roll and pitch sensing? compensating for limited GPS accuracy? Providing backup for when there isn't a good GPS signal? Crash sensor?

As you can see there should be lots of neat stuff that can be done with it. For example if you flip your vehicle the wiimote can tell your carpc which will flip the image on your touchscreen allowing you to comfortably browse your MP3s while waiting for the jaws of life...

Hmm, guess this is my first post here although Ive been lurking for about a week. I plan on taking all of the really sweet ideas floating around on this board and integrating them into my soon to be 'new' white 81 Caddilac Sedan Deville. Many pics will follow when that gets rolling, until then thanks for the inspiration!

Dunno if a wiimote can sense translation, but it senses rotation, thus it could provides information about car moves. Couple that to speed signal & gps via a kalman filter and voila, a cheap deadreckonning system.
