Someone here has be be able to crack this HDRadio for the car!

3/18 UPDATE: THE RACE FOR STANDALONE SOFTWARE HAS BEGUN! We know we can do it we have the resources, all we need now is some time. I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the project so far. Mitchjc and Xtremak are working on their software interfaces and rr integration.
As for me, I have been running the unit with the hard to control RRIBUS software for a month now. I get great reception, great sound quality and the HD Radio (when available) sounds amazing.

2/16 UPDATE:
I have taken a test drive all the way to Atlantic City (120 miles round trip) and back using just the radio. I had amazing reception the entire way. No alternator noise, no static , a few times it dropped out of HD but the Standard FM radio sounds great as well.

So just to confirm some FAQ:
1. HEADUNIT QUALITY RECEPTION WHILE MOVING INSTALLED IN A CAR (BOTH HD AND STD RADIO)
2. HD RADIO when available Standard Radio when not
3. Multi Cast capable
4. RDS text both AM and FM
5. NO DIRECT TUNING only Tune up/dn Seek up/dn

2/11 UPDATE:
WOW!! I removed the Dice antenna and hooked it up to my factory antenna... FM in HD AM in HD stations from Philly i cant even pick up with the factory radio!!!

I was able to pick up like 15 HD radio staitons in FM alone! The sound is amazing.. some of the older stations in regular FM came in crystal CLEAR!

This is THE solution for the CAR PC RADIO both HD and NON HD! The sound quality in HD is better then XM! AM sounds outstanding...

Software integration to come..

2/9 UPDATE:
I have confirmed communication and control of the unit. as well as sound!

1/23 UPDATE:
The GOOD: Between Davedog and myself we should be able to get this running. Davedog has discovered that this possibly be controlled buy an I2C interface directly to the HD radio bypassing the Car interface. Rolf Resler has shipped my Ibus interface yesterday and i should get it this weekend. Then we hook it up and go. We have confirmed that the IBUS interface can exist outside of the car by adding a resistor (1k) and 12v to the ibus line. Roadrunner has plugin support for controling the IBUS interface. All we need now is a modified skin in RR and we are all set.

The BAD: There is no direct tune ability as of yet. You have to scroll up or dn in order to tune. You do however have the ability of using presets and preset buttons.

The UGLY: Once again we have managed to take the oldest part of in car entertainment (Radio) and make it one of the most expensive components for the CAR PC. Est $250

1/10 UPDATE: I will be ordering the HD Radio unit and the IBUS to USB adapter. We have the init code and the response code. Now we just need the button codes and were all set to control.

I was looking around and it seems that Dice electronics has created an add on HDRADIO for OEM radio systems.

http://www.diceelectronics.com/hd_integration.htm

The HD DICE™ is an external HD Radio™ tuner that integrates to the factory car radio the same way as an external SAT radio tuner would. The HD DICE integration allows users to change and select HD Radio stations using the buttons on their existing car radio or using the controls found on the steering wheel. This thing also has an ipod interface too as well as an aux input also.. If we can hack this we will gain soo much.

It displays HD data on the radio. It must use some real basic protocols to be compatable with alot of factory radios..

A simple serial connection and we may be in...

Just sent them an email to see if they would build a serial / usb interface for the unit. Please post here if you are interested so i can show them the demand for an external radio for the pc.. this will tune both HD and analog am fm radio.

That's a pretty specific list of cars there: BMW, Mini Cooper, Toyota, Lexus, Scion. But I see they have more 'coming soon'.

Well, maybe you've found a way to get HD radio for the PC..

I am very interested in this. It would be awesome if they could make this serial or usb.

I wonder if this company is the same as one members.

since the BMW is IBus, and there is an IBus to USB adapter, hopefully, some one will find the protocols and put it all together.

No response from the company. So i have enlisted the help of our friend MitchJS to see if he would be interested in reverse engineering the connection for PC interface. Everyone please chime in.. I think this could be our breakthrough for headunit quality Radio both Analog and HD. Not to mention the Ipod interface and Aux in interface this unit has.
The unit has Analog AM/FM tuning with RBDS when Hd signal is not available.

It would be the holy grail for US and possibly Canada systems, not much help to anyone else.

I actually had PM'd MithJS about cracking the Kenwood HD unit several months ago, but never got a response, but this unit does have more features.

However, we may have all the info available to use a BMW model unit with this adapter http://www.reslers.de/IBUS/

and additional info that is linked on that page for controlling the IBus.

I wish I had time to research it out, and the funds to blow to buy the stuff.

I asked him about that also a few months ago. He said that the Kenwood and Apline bus is hard to work with. Since this works just like his alpine sirius converter i thought this may be a better unit to try to hack.

Im trying to complile a list of codes for the ibus that we can reverse engineer.

so far this is all i got
IBUS Code Comments
C0 06 68 31 00 00 0B 94 "Mode" Button: Press
C0 06 68 01 00 13 4B C7 "Mode" Button: Release
50 03 C8 01 9A "R/T" Button: Press
68 03 18 01 72 Radio polling for CD changer. Expects response of 18 04 68 02 00 76.
18 04 68 02 00 76 CD changer responding to Radio to confirm existance.
50 04 68 32 10 1E "Volume Down" Button: Press
50 04 68 32 11 1F "Volume Up" Button: Press

I will try to get a list of codes based on the buttons required to be used on the DICE unit.. Hopefully we can get the ibus usb adaptor to SEND signals also. If we can do that then we should be able to get controls set in.. then we need to find out how to get the live radio data to the computer..

Once we get the codes we can use the Ibus plugin to roadrunner or build an interface for anyone who dosent use RR..

Confirmed: reslers ibus interface can send commands and there is software that is easily customizable..

Now we just need to find out how to initialize the Dice unit and i have a feeling we are good to go.

I don't think the 2 are the same. Dice electronic is in Lake Tahoe, NV and the fellow member is in LA, CA.

I just joined the group.. i will compile the data needed..

Once i can identify all the buttons per the Dice manual and get the needed ibus codes i will purchase the unit and go to town.
At this rate it will cost me $250 bux shipped, but for HD radio and good stable radio i will do it. After all i can sell my HQCT to make up for it

I am to assume that we need to initialize the unit by sending the Polling code for CD changer: 68 03 18 01 72

and having it wait for response: 18 04 68 02 00 76.

Here are the buttons from the Manual of the HD tuner:

Mode: Press C0 06 68 31 00 00 0B 94 / Release C0 06 68 01 00 13 4B C7

If anyone wants to chime in: These are based on the E46 but this is said to work on ALL BMW models using Ibus so i assume any vehicle code will work.

I have found the codes from the E46 monitor which may work also..
