Car pc/ Sony XPD-210eq

I have a Question I would like to get ideas on. I want to go with a carpc in the place of a hu but I am really worried about the quality of the soundcards available. I have a sony Mobile es XDP-210EQ that is a digital pre-amp/EQ/crossover. It has a digital optical in and from what I understand 20 bit burr brown DAC's.

My question is does anybody think it is feasible to make a software program to control this via a pc?
If this could be done It would seem It would even be possible to control volume via this unit.

You'd be surprised at the quality of a good soundcard.

Software can perform many functions of your sony piece at greater bitrate's than are available in most processors and the accuracy is pretty amazing in my opinion.

I have not heard of anyone attempting to hack sony's UNI-LINK, but who knows.

I have seen it done but not on this scale. Sourceforge has some source to emulate a CD changer on unilink. It also uses a simple rs-232 adapter somebody built. but it doesn't do what I would like to do. I havent been able to find a soundcard with the same quality of DAC's as this unit. I have seen some USB and fire wire DAC's of this quality but they are very spendy, and dont have a 31 band eq or digital time alignment or 3 pairs of line outs

I did notice a thread on here that interested me using the Beringer dcx2496 that interested me the only disappointment I have with it is it has no on board volume control

FYI the 210EQ has different DACs for the Front/Rear(AKM 20-bit Delta-Sigma DACs) and the SUB.(1x NEC 16-bit DAC) I also think they are locked to either 44.1Khz or 48KHz sample rates?

The sound quality of Burr Brown chips, although very good, is a bit Subjective.. There are many DAC chips these days that do 24 Bit/192KHz and the difference in brands are up to personal taste.

Many of the newer Pro-type sound cards will have performance that equals or surpasses anything you can get from off the shelf processors.

I am definately open to suggestions on what sound cards would give me a reasonably close or better sound than 210 I am also curious as to if there are any soundcards capable of running a 3way setup

That's entirely dependent on how you plan on controlling your audio....EQ, XO, etc.

You will need 7+ outputs most likely, unless you're using an outboard processor, in which case you just need a single output (optical or analog).

This is all up to you really. Start researching sound cards based on what you will need and make your decisions based on that.
