M-Audio Firewire 410 is a good choice too. It has routing features in its software I thought.
Any other choices? THe M-Audio 410 requires a firewire port (already using my pcmcia slot for a usb 2.0 card adapter) and the ESI gigaport doesn't support directwire (is this 100% required).
I'm currently using an audigy 2 nx, but obviously want to upgrade so I can ditch my old phoenix gold eq230.

direct wire isn't 100% required. There's other options out there.
Can you use a PCI card?

No pci options
Unfortunately (well fortunately in some respects) I'm using my old Toshiba Satellte with a 2.4GHz Celeron and a gig of memory. Plenty of horsepower for the car (and I mounted the laptop quite well under the passenger seat) but leaves a little to be desired for my pro audio tastes.
The laptop has a single pc card slot which I currently have populated with a two port usb 2.0 card (the two usb ports built into the laptop are 1.1 hence the desire for the pc card).
Is there such a thing as pc card to PCI???? Never looked, wouldn't be 100% shocked to find such a monster though.
Assuming the answer is "no", I'm on the quest for the ultimate usb sound card that can work with the software (xover, 1/3rd octave dual eq, time alignment) that you guys are enjoying with the pci cards. Would love to ditch the old phoenix gold eq and move everything into the laptop.
What to do???

there is such an adaptor, but it's rediculously expensive, like you could by a new core 2 duo laptop for that price kinda expensive, so that's not an option really
you can get a pcmcia card that has 2 usb's & firewire, that would be a good way for you to go really...

Yes I've seen those cards, so back to the question: Which sound card then if I have the expansion card giving me usb and firewire? The m-audio 410? Its a bit pricey and from what I can tell about three years old. Anything comparable and cheaper? They seem to be about $234 and up.

Here is a list I put together for External Soundcards. Focus on the Pro-Audio cards. How many channels do you need?
You might be able to get something around the $200 mark if you only need 4-6 channels. Keep in mind, if you plan on using Frequency Allocator you need something to capture the audio stream. If the soundcard does not have the ability to do this you will probably need to buy VAC @$50. That is why Directwire is important. The M-Audio Firewire 410 also has something similar to Directwire with their drivers.
EDIT:

So all you need is an EQ? If that's all you need that can be done with your current soundcard. Check the WIKI. I wrote an article about using a 31band EQ inside of Winamp.

No I want all of my processing in the carputer (i.e. xover = freq allocator, eq, and time alignment).
Did you forget a link or am I missing something, I don't see a list/link that you are referring to for the usb cards.
Thanks for all your help, this is a good resource.

Ok, this was requested and I whipped this up really quick. It's only a piece of the puzzle but if you want to know how to use Console, this a basic guide. There will be a more indepth on available when I have time that will be posted in the WIKI so that others can feel free to add to it or make changes to correct anything I miss. For now here you go. I ahd to split it into two parts to get it to fit on this board.

Guides for Console VST plugins AND KXproject driver tuning are up in the Wiki.

Install and use this with winamp, configure it accordingly with the chanels, test for correct asio driver and your all set?
If so then the 20+ pages on this subject has been simplified to this? Can't be.

I'd suggest reading up on what allocator does specifically, it's just a piece to the puzzle...
