this thread is as much hardware as it is software as it is audio.....
I think software guys are needed here maybe, but might never see this thread unless they happen to also be audiophiles.... I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to start a thread in the software forum about the usb communication end of this may be.... jjust a thought...

good point. Although last time I tried to post audio realted software in there it went unanswered unless it was directly associated with a frontend.

a hardware thread in the hardware forum is a good idea. Once we have an idea on what hardware, THEN we can go to the software side of things...how it's interfacing and what not.
Does that make sense?

yeah, I guess as I posted that I also realized that unless a software guy is really interested in the same goals then there would be no reason for involvement...

I guess hardware makes sense... at some point someone is going to have to develop a circiut board & invest in actually prototyping something.... of course, first there has to be a plan of action.... the component layout & diagrams need to be finalized.. it's usually cheaper to do stuff like this in multiples.... maybe a prototype can be built with a project board, but if the components involve smd's or dual layer boards then it'll have to be sent out.... even to build a board to test...
kinda hard to go building hardware without knowing the software end is going to be worked out.....
so what's the plan red, are you building & investing here? at some point this may go from talking to actually doing... is this what your after?

well we should get a well planned out outline before we start the new thread. Then stand strong to only figuring out what is needed to accomplish our goals.
so to recap design goals (please add to this as there are a bunch of posts i've skipped over)
USB DAC
I. Hardware
A. 8 stereo chans
1)24/bit
2)192kHz
B. usb 2.0
C. opamps
1)audiophile grade
2)Replacable opamps
D. outputs
1) min 4vrms (8vrms ideal)
2) balanced output (i know..it's a long shot) but we are talking audiophile grade here)
E. Processing
1)no hardware processing
F. Power Supply
G. Volume Control
II. Software

another avenue we should investigate is this unit here:
http://www.macrom.it/EN/amps/extreme/ext.adsp_82.htm
maybe it will spark some ideas or give us some answers

Durwood and Red
What do you see on each of the audio channels?
4 or 5 pairs of redundant stereo channels?
Will any of the channels be virtualize through an effects processor?
Possibly you may be looking for programmability to how each chanal processes the audio?
Or maybe you want to do what Doede did with multiple DACs/CODEC to get better sound?
I can see using the channels as a seperate audio 'zone' where each listener can hear their own audio. Kids music in back is seperate from each other and the front. Now that may have 'resale' value. ???
Full of questions now.

all x-overs on the pc.... meaning each speaker output independantly adjusted in console for time delay, x-overs & at least 1/3 octave tunning...
1&2= tweeters, 3&4= mid's... 5&6= front subs.... 7&8= rear subs.... rear speakers? who needs em most will only have a 2 way front stage though & rear fill could be on 5&6...

Thanks for the clarity. Now I see that good use of extra channels. I just sent a PM to durwood for help in wrapping my little head around the output issue. I am such a ...
With your set up, if the channels could be expanded then extra specialized speakers could be added later like those nasty horns you stuff into your cars.
I have read on the forum that switching out to ASIO my break a few FEs. Hopefully there are a few readers who can work/program on that layer besides the firmware layer and the hardware level.
Again thanks for the enlightenment.
