I think I blew my slim dvd drive, can i bring it back?

Well I wasn't thinking and I gave my slim dvd drive in an external enclosure 12V instead of 5V. What I basically did was cut the end off of the ac adapter and soldered it to an 18 Gauge wire which I then soldered to a molex 12V wire(the yellow one).

I heard a pop a short while after I was testing out my system, i'm not sure if it was the dvd drive or not, but it is not working even inside the house on a normal ac adapter. So is it possible to reverse this mistake, or did I just throw $70 down the toilet lol.

Well, a good place to start would be the voltage regulator on the enclosure's board. I am not sure how electonicly savy you are, but you can look at the board to see if any components are burned or just look a little out of place.

If you are not into that kind of thing... then yeah, you probably have an expensive paper weight. What kind of dvd drive is it?

check component C5 on the enclosure board (47 10V) to see if is burned...if you realized the mistake and disconnected the power leading to the device you may be ok.

Thanatos.

It is the dvd drive from the mp3car store, and I will look to see if anything looks burned. But if it is not burned and it is still not working what, if anything can I do to get it working again.

Well I doubt it has a fuse, so the even if not "burned" the voltage regulator is probably dead. So you would just have to order a new one from mouser or something and solder it on.

Again this is assuming you unplugged it wqhen you heard a pop and did not let the 12v go into the system for a long time.

Maybe you just fried the external enclosure circuit and your drive is still fine....

I think more than likely you have just thrown £70 down the toilet........but if the drive i external like you say, I think the controller is fried, but the DVD drive should be just fine.
In that case you can buy a cheap external slim dvd case on ebay for a couple of quids!

I might try a new external case, I wish there was a ide-slimdrive converter so I could test that beast. Worst case scenario is if both are fried then I already have one piece that I need. Thanks Guys for the help

You probably just toasted the enclosure. I have had enough adapters die on me in the past. It rarely hurts the drive.
