Anyone hacked an Ipod Click wheel?

So I 'm sitting around, wondering what buttons I can use for input into my carputer.

I've thought about hacking up some factory radios just to get buttons that match the style of my interior and then it hit me:

A click wheel off an ipod nano, mini, or 4th gen click wheel would be one slick interface!

If I grabbed a black on, it would match my interior nicely.

So a quick trip to ebay scored a 4th gen and a nano wheel in black for a couple bucks. My fluke awaits the mailman's usual "liesurely" delivery................

Has anyone else "gone down this road" before, or will I be the first?

Any advice or input you can offer would be great and well appreciated.

My personal one is a 170 series.

We also have a few more types at work, but those are for aircraft electronics applications.

We're pretty fussy about usage and calibration on those (for abvious reasons), we don't use them on anything else besides work related projects.

Someone hacked up their iPod wheel and incorporated into a steering wheel, I believe...

The closest thing i've seen is someone hacking their apple remote. which i believe is that you're refering to Darque, but that's all i've seen around the forums.

I had a look on my old 3rd gen iPod to see how feasible it is. In that the screen, scroll wheel and buttons are all connected through a single 30 pin ribbon cable with a press-fitting SMT socket.

So it should be doable if you have the tools, but for most people I would say not possible. You will need to either custom-fabricate a board with the socket on it or do some very fine soldering
