There are a few threads on this but nothing conclusive about which cam is the best. Some people go for the license plate attached spycam type cameras and a few others have tried USB based webcam versions.

Again, nothing really conclusive on any of them. A lot of people with Xenarc screens like the license plate cams since the Xenarcs automatically switch to the camera when power is applied. Normally they are connected to the reverse lights so when you back out of your driveway the cam turns on automatically.

Do a few searches on this and you'll see several examples of what people are currently using.

You do however get what you pay for so the $20/ebay webcams dont give you the picture quality of the $100 dedicated backup camera. The issue with these are ease of installation since they can require a modified housing or hole in your trunk.

Which ones are you looking at?

The Ebay item has finished, but looking at the vendor's store I see a camera boasting 54degree viewing angle. This is NOT good for a backup camera.
MP3car store has a 110degree camera, I would go for this as a minimum.

look around for internet / computer security cameras. Then generally able to record at very low light levels. Make sure it has good res and frame rate since that is a general weakness in security cams

The problem I have found with my cheapass USB camera is that it is too bright outside for it to work. The image is completely white.

What can you expect for $12 delivered...

I've been skulking around to find a good reverse camera as well and it really doesn't look like anything usb is going to work very well especially in low-light conditions.

CCD, component video with built-in IR illuminators are really probably all that will get a good quality video resolution in all weather conditions.

How are you planning on switching to the reverse camera's view within your front end? Seemlessly switching from the front end's current screen (whatever it may be) to the reverse camera when you actually put your car in reverse (like OEM equipment does) seems like it might be quite a task.

A trigger from the reverse light wire to a relay to provide power to the camera is quite easy. Xenarc screens have the ability to auto switch to AV when a signal is detected.
Not sure if Lilliput screens have the same or not.

When I get around to it I will be using a video capture card to the PC, so software will drive the display - with record abilities too. I think I'll use something like fusion brain to send a hot key to switch the display when reverse is selected.

Certain Lilliputs do, and some dont, the ones that dont can be mod'ed to do it.... CAM wise I went with a 60 angle, which isnt great for most setups, but when you have 3 cams its ok......

Thanks Cluck! I'm going to jot that down to search out some solutions for that reverse light relay.

Back to searching...
