Using Asus EEE PC 7" touchscreen overlay mod

I did a search on the forums and was surprised that no one has mentioned this yet.

I broke my touch screen overlay the other day and was looking around for replacements when I stumbled upon this: (ebay search: 7" eee pc)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200240729357

Heaps of them floating around on ebay for around $50AU inc. shipping
Looks almost exactly the same to the Lilliput replacement 4 wire resistive TS's. I bought one from ebay so ill post up my results when I get it.

Yes please keep us updated.
Do some testing with the controller already on the monitor and with the controller that comes with the touchscreen.

Well I received the touchscreen kit today. At first I thought the touchscreen was too small for the 7" lilliput I have but upon closer inspection I realised its a perfect fit!!!

I had to solder directly onto the ribbon cable that is attached to the touchscreen because the kit didnt include a proper connector for it. Even if I were to use the kit with an Asus eee PC I wouldve had to solder to it so I dont understand why they sent me an incomplete kit. Doesnt matter though as the soldering took a whole 2 minutes to do anyways.

Its a 4-wire resistive touchscreen, so the existing controller I had (the one that came with the lilliput) worked just fine. I didnt end up even testing the controller I got in the kit. The drivers didnt need updating or anything. Just plug and play

Overall, for $50 (inc. shipping) for an entire touchscreen kit (inc. controller) you cant go wrong! Im very happy.

I didnt take pics, unfortunately. But I also want to mention that the overhanging area of the touchscreen is different to the one that came with the lilliput (ie. the part that you dont touch, the border, on the touchscreen). It doesnt overhang any extra to the original touchscreen, if anything its much less.

Im looking at the picture on the auction and the connector looks the same as the one from the lilliput. Did you received something different from whats pictured?

Can you help me determine if it will work on my lilliput?

I have the same lilliput as the one pictured.

The touchsreen I got has the ribbon cable coming off the top of the overlay but to the right (as opposed to the left of the overlay that comes with the lilliput). So I had to solder on wires to the ribbon cable to extend the length of it so I could plug it into the controller (which is on the left side of the PCB).

Also, in the 5th pic the link you posted at the top left there is a part of the board labelled "SIP4". The touchscreen overlay I got came with a surface mounted plug that utilises that part of the board. I soldered on the plug but the ribbon cable on the overlay wasnt long enough to reach it.

I guess in this case a pic would speak a thousand words. If I pull the screen out ill take pics but the bottom line is if youre handy with a soldering iron you wont have a problem

Exactly the same as the overlay that comes with the screen. Very reflective in direct sunlight
Clarity between overlays is no different, unfortunately.

JayeKaye,

I've got a question for you, since you've actually held one of these in your hand.

May seem like a weird question but, is this screen flexible or is it rigid?

The reason I ask is, my CarPC is displayed on my factory Nav screen, which has a capacitive touchscreen. Have never found anyone or seen any information on tapping into this factory touchscreen (I even tried myself and failed miserably).

I'm wondering if I can put one of these over-top of my existing screen and use it to control the CarPC. I know that I can easily hook this up to the CarPC and get that part to work but, what I'm not sure about is will I be able to push "through" this screen and activate the factory touchscreen behind it.

I know, weird idea...and I know about problems with triggering both screens to do different things but, I think I can make that work. but, I can't lose my factory touchscreen in the process.

So, is this thing a thin piece of immovable glass or is it a thin, flexible overlay, or something in-between?

I appreciate your input here.

Interesting. The part that makes it rigid is the glass where the actual touchscreen device is mounted. If you could find a way to peel it off you could try to put it on top of another screen. Even if you find a way of removing the resistive layer, I dont think your actual capacitive touchscreen will continue working if you put the resistive layer on top.

JayKaye, can you contact the seller and ask if they will sell only the screen as we dont need the controller or anything else.

Habious,

Sorry mate but its rigid. The resistive overlay is stuck on a piece of glass. Like silvi4000 said, you could try to peel the overlay off but I wouldnt. Chances are you will break it. Its stuck to a piece of glass for a reason

Do you know if this touchscreen kit would work to modify a standard 7" (Legacy) lcd panel, rather than just using it to replace a damaged touchscreen? Does the kit come with everything needed to run it off a carpc? I've got an Epia M10000, and 3 different 7" lcd's, one of which I was hoping I could use one of these touchscreen kits on. I figure that will save me a bundle of money instead of buying an actual touchscreen monitor.

I wish I had bought the one I saw a couple days ago from a U.S. vendor, so I don't have to risk buying from someone out of the country. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews about these Hong Kong vendors. Although I have done some business with various companies throughout the world, and had fairly good luck, but usually my business has been direct with manufacturers.

$46.99 isn't bad, the cheapest I think I found on ebay was about $43 ($33 for the panel, and $10 shipping).

The circuit board in the picture is a usb controller. So I'd say, yes it will add touch capability to any 7" screen.
