It actually (as many of the things in my install, which is one of the reasons i love my car so much ) happened to fit perfectly on the bottom lip of the gauge cluster. Its dirrectly below the speedo (center gauge) dyed blacked to match, and it fits snugly under the trip odometer reset button.

I use a Palm Vx (Well, WILL whenever I get it fixed) with a USB - Serial adapter and Jukebox/PalmAmp software to control winamp. This was the best option for me because I had to keep every thing 100% removable and it is less of a distraction while driving. I had a version of this setup with my first carputer that died a full 30 minutes after I got it going.

MP3DUB:
I would say that's a bit awkward to use while driving.. but you really shouldn't be using it while driving anyway I suppose

mp3car system is currently FUBAR and finances do not allow for a correction of that situation

Yeah, that was part of my reasoning for putting it were it was. I could have also put in more obtrusivly on the knee brace, but it looks good where it is, and i shouldnt use anything other than the ir remote at speed.

Hey are you guys having problems with the home brew IRman compliant PIC devices? I've found the DSE ones have an annoying plastic shield on the top of them (which is supposed to increase it's receptive angle), and it stuffs up the signal sometimes..., and Jaycar's ones are unbuffered so you need to an additional IC to buffer the signal.
In my setup i have a Swann USB Keypad, and i'm using DirectInput to talk to it. Unfortunately it ends up being a keyboard device, and it's not possible to distinguish keypresses on the keypad and on the keyboard >_<, so i've set my app to always stay on the foreground, but at least with DirectInput i can accept the nonstandard keys like play, pause, stop on the keypad.

So... I was thinking, heres a question for you folks who do have programmable buttons... Can I make one button alt-tab-tab ? I mean, if I had one button that could let me toggle between the mp3 player and the gps that would be great.
Alt+Tab will toggle between two programs (this has existed since Win 3.1). So there is really no need to hold ALT if all you are doing is switching between two programs.

If you got more than 2 programs running, holding alt and tapping tab will circle through the programs, releasing alt will change focus to the program selected.

yeah, also works with say, filesystem windows..
So, say for example you have the following windows open
- filesystem window: winamp playlists
- filesystem window: mp3 directory (to quickly access that occasional song you want to hear thats not in the play lists)
- File system window: gps icon in it, or, if gps is running, just the program
- program: winamp
With just alt and tab you could easily cycle through these windows, avoiding annoying window dragging or a lot of max ing and mini ing windows...
Of course, if you have a touchscreen, you could maximize and minimize just by hitting the buttons on the screen, and then hitting the icons in the task bar...
The more I think about it, the more the touchscreen seems like the perfect solution.
