I'm sure this is a dumb Q, but why couldn't you just lengthen the leads to the switch (by like 10 ft). I mean, you probably have to run the IDE cables to your DVD drive anyway, right?

My thought was when people want to start it as they walk towards the car.

This way it will be up and running as they get in the car...

I've posted a circuit to do this using a power lock controller several times. You should be able to locate it doing a search for "remote" under my name.
