LindyM, I'm having trouble getting what you are saying.
Yes you need a program for LCD to output text. If you need one i can post it here. A bit later... i'm working on some extra LCD things.

I have a transmission controller added in my car. it has serial port. The makers of this unit say you can connect a 2x16 lcd screen and it will display basic transmission information. So I bout this one from silicon craft. but it only display the default screen from the factory. I was told I have to program it.

was wondering if someone on here can program it

LindyM, forst your LCD is not serial but rather paralel. Second it will only output whatever you will input in it. I dont undertand waht you men by saind transmission controll... do you refer to actuall car transmission or you using that word to refere to Input / Output controller?

quantum, damn thats expnsive for me just to do a paint job
But in your case you have so much space for buttons. In my car it so tight, no free space at all, thats what you get in sports cars ...

I have a high performance automatic transmission that requires a controller to shift. that controller unit has a serial port to make adjustments and display vital information thru an lcd.
The LCD I bought is show the default screen and needs to be programed I guess.

ok then what you need it to connect your transmission to CarPC serial port grab data, process it and output it via paralel port to your LCD

You can also get Amtel or PIC controller that will elliminate the PC part but then you will need to design controller spesificly to much your needs. I can ask my engeeners to do the controller for you but that will be mad expansive .. well prolly like $1000 for work + ~$250 for PCB print and parts.

the maker of the controller said you just connect a 2x16 lcd screen to a null modem cable. just 3 wires Ground, TXT, and RX

this is a quote from the manual "Connect the serial port to a 16x2 serial display for an in car display of the current mode, gear, lockup, throttle, mph, and rpm!"

ok then you dont need a controller.. so only thing you need is serial to paralel adapter (you LED is paralel it says so on the screen) Lat time i build LED display myslelf io remember there was a wiring diagram on how to convert serial to paralel.. that should not be that hard.
