I am thinking of attempting to hack a touch screen monitor (like a lilliput) to either read the touchscreen membrane already installed with a micro controller. Or replace the current one with a new one that would me micro controller readable.

I am wondering if others have attempted and if they could give me some hints and details. I know I can do the replace option but would really like to have to buy and modify the least amount possible.
