Hey all,
i have recently bought a 2003 holden vectra (badged opel, etc elsewhere). ive started planning carpc (my third now) for it, but theres one thing thats holding me up....CANBUS, from what i understand, it is used for the steering wheel controls, trip computer, stereo, etc. Is this a system when i can use a CAN 2 usb type device and then pull whatever commands out i want? is there software to do this? or am i better off trying to isolate and remove the stereo etc?

Ive spent hours seaching the net and just found various fragments of info about it all over the place.

So, basically, anyone who's had success intergrating CANBUS with a car pc, can you please post here with info and/or links to worklogs?

Hi,
One week ago Im start on my project CAN BUS comunication on Fiat Stilo... I working on plugin for Centrafuse - CAN comunication, emulating OBDII plugin for other plugins, OBDII labels(Same as in original OBDII plugin in CF), Gauges.
Today Im sucessfuly test RPM, coolant temp., total odometer and half working speed(Some mistake in calculation).
Look for CANHack application(freeware) and you will see how easy is CAN monitoring Maybe you will find codes on CanHack forum and it will be a lot of easyer...

ok that sounds awesome, but also, has anyone had any success getting steeringwheel controls, trip computer screens etc working with car pc through CANBUS?

I have a Dodge Charger that uses the 2 different can buses for communication. One is for very similar to obdii, and the other is for the interior components like steering wheel controls, radio, satellite radio, and many other things. I have written software that integrates with Road/Ride Runner and utilizes the steering wheel controls, satellite radio, amplifier, and some other minor pieces of information available on that bus.

I use the canusb from canusb.com.

Check out the website and forums for hacking the canbus on the Chrysler vehicles at canhack.org

I haven't yet put together a car computer, but this was a feature that I would have to have in order to use a car computer daily.

I don't know what CAN protocol use Idea... I know that Punto MK2 use same as stilo(B-CAN - 50kbit 11Bit) For Punto MK3 I know that use 29bit...

You can try with CANUSB or CAN232 device...

Just for info my plugin will not work with OBD reader it work only with CANUSB or CAN232 from lawicel...
