Been thninking about iDrive type controllers again

Dangerous I know......

people like the idea of controllers like the powermate, but I may have found the solution, if someone would like to write a girder plugin.

Think of the iDrive. You get twist for scrolling, joystick movement for navigating through control screen icons and a button on top for selecting.

Now. Look at what arcade type interfaces and equipment you could use.

First, how do you hook it into the computer.
You use this

And some programming software could be based on Some of these or a girder plugin.

For the stick hardware these two sticks could provide the twist and joy movement for mouse and scroll.

And This button could be either mounted on top of the stick.

then make a large disc type knob to firmly fasten to the top of the button (cylindrical, to totally cover the shaft), and sprung loaded, so you push down it engages the switch (although as the switch is momentary, it should push back anyway).

Best way to mount the cylindrical knob would be to carve splines into the stick, and into the hole though the centre of the knob.
That way, it will allow the knob to move up and down, but still be a good enough fit turn the stick.

Those two last links don't come up...

I'm interested to see your ideas as I would like the same thing.

Ahh, OK, fixed now. Happ had some wierd stuff going on with ! characters, and redirected addresses, so there were two http:// parts.

Buggered up the way the board handles URLs in links.

They work now.

Bumping this up again ;-)

I was thinking about the same thing ( kind off) I was wondering if it would be possible to get the parts from an old (forcefeedback ? ) joystick and make sort of an I-Drive control ( mounted around your gearshift or something ? )

Any ideas on that ?

On a similar view, its not the same exactly, but I have bought an old arcade style gameport 2 button joystick I plan to butcher and use to control my player... Just up, down, left, right and 2 buttons.

I agree with noctris, I would think it would be much easier and cheaper to just hack up an existing joystick then make one from scratch and probably give you better control.

Isn't iDrive force feedback too? So that when you move over a button or something it would give you tactile feedback telling you you have done so. Now that would be really cool.

I've added my first (and what I thought my last post) about this type of solution under the "griffin powermate nice but" thread.

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...t=18761&page=3

This is the solution I have worked on within my girder based solution. Its taken over a year, but it works very well. I have no keyboards, just this and the head unit controls using VWCDPIC.

More MMI than i-drive. For slightly more information, follow the thread above.
