I bought some infrared lenses that is like the kind used in military vehicles.... it isn't totally invisable but gives off a faint dark red glow.... to the camera it is like daylight however.... with these lenses on my fogs & HID bulbs behind them I can drive pretty fast in TOTAL darkness.... just by watching the screen.... it's like driving in a video game since your only clue as to your suroundings are what you see on the screen...
hunters & poachers use light like this for nighttime long distance hunting.... ir leds have a limited distance..... this goes MUCH further..... my system is down at the moment but when I get it back up I'll post some shots....

Wow! That's awesome! It sounds about 95% of how I want mine to be.
Turbocad, would you be kind enough to provide model/part numbers of the Lenses, the camera, the HIDs (how bright?), and approximately how far ahead do you see (½ block, ¼ block, etc.)

I got my IR camera from Hong Kong at last! Had it wired in 20 minutes with a 6' extension.
What a blast! The 5.6" LCD has enough glow to disturb the camera, but in the complete dark shows the house beautifully. 40' down the hall and shows the kitchen in detail.
Machined alum case with 30 leds and photo resistor to control the on/off/intensity control. All for $11.50 USD.
Now to finish the modded dash, Speedo, Tach and 5.6" LCD. Rectangular LEDS replace the idiot lights.
(The guy doing my inspection was blown out of the water seeing the level of tech in a 1981 car

the hids are 4300kstock lexus xenon bulbs w/ lexus ballast computers.. the lenses are flat sheet lenses...got them off ebay.... hunters use them for poaching & stuff I think
I know the camera is a sony superHAD chip...480 res w.002 lux....it was over $250 & is designed for security in dvr installs...I'll check to let you know model, think it was a speco catalog...
It's hard to say really what the distance is... can always see blocks with no headlights, but theres usually a lot of ambient light in the city..... in really dark can see a block at least I guess, these lights aren't totally invisable though, you can see a faint blood red glow from them, especially head on... they look pretty sick to me, aren't very noticable... but for the most part not very useful often. I took them out to modify the fog light mounting brackets... should get them back in soon

I wanted to have night surveliance of my car from an infared cappable webcam, and it seems those lenses may be the answer.
Sample ebay auction or product name please?

I think this guy was the seller.... I don't see any current listings from him for these... you could email him to ask about them though...

i dont think this would be too stealthy considering you would have a red glow coming out from the lense... you might want to get high output IR leds...

The ones I've seen have the same faint red glow.

if its faint enough it should be barely noticeable at a distance

it's a pretty faint blood red glow, mostly only visible head on...., but the distance is far greater than ir leds..... if you want to drive 40-50mph with no lights this is the way to do it.... I tried doubling the lens.... it's practically invisable then, but the range is much less.... I was able to get different gauges of the stuff.... thinner was better range, but more visable to the naked eye.....
just a note.... this really is just a novelty, unless your doing covert observation it really has no practical purpouse.... I had it in for a while, don't know if I'm going to bother putting it back really.....
THE ONLY REASON top use ir lighting is if you need the light to be invisable/un-noticable, otherwise a low light camera is more than sufficient..... reverse lights alone are enough to light up a large area through a low light camera.... most night vision setups are just a compensation for an inadequate low light chip...
nice to play with though....

I live in deer/moose country.
In your opinion would this type of setup be worth the effort when used in conjunction with normal driving lamps? Does it show anything other than what normal lights cast their rays on? Would a warm object like a large animal really stand out on the display?
Thanks.

no, that's thermal imaging... nothing to do with ir.... the caddy noightvision used thermal imaging... it was a $5,000 option on the dts though...
ir will do nothing if you already have light...

I've always wondered if "spotting" your plate with IR would blot it on on camera. From what I've seen, most don't too well with bright spots.
