If i used....

A usb IRDA adapter and a "Sky Open Keyboard" could there be a shread of hope that i would find a program to train the irda to the keyboard?

This would work but it will be a PITA to configure all of it. It may be worth it just get a wireless keyboard that works out of the box...

Get an RF keyboard that works out of the box. It might cost you $30 more, but you'll save yourself so many headaches.

I haven't seen any sucesses using IRDA and girder.

I got mine off Ebay UK for the princely sum of ten pounds. I'm sure you could get it stateside quite cheaply if need be though.
