PS2 3 Button(Rotary Wheel) Mouse Properties?

I'm working with Ben (HybridEngineer) to give him some idea's on design and functionality. I allready got past all the design things and got into some other things....Main IDEA was to use the Mouse Wheel as a Rotary Volume Knob...so people could plug up a cheap PS2 mouse, rip the wheel out, and custom fit it wherever anyone wanted as a Rotary Volume Knob.

Well any mouse that has 2 buttons and a wheel, actualy have 3 buttons and a wheel.... So I was thinking, how can we change the properties of a regular PS2/USB 3 button wheel mouse (some cheap 10 dolor mouse) so that we can use the 1st click as a different function. Touchscreens use the 1st click function of a mouse for when you touch the screen. I have the ps2 mouse hooked up next to my USB Trackball mouse...and if I change the settings..the regular mouse changes..so how can I get it so they have two totaly different properties...so that secondary mouse can be used for different functions?

Our idea is, if its possible. Besides the Rotary Volume Knob, we can setup Click 1 to be Previous, Click 2 can be Play/Pause, and Click 3 can be Next.... But that means all 3 buttons on the second mouse cannot be tied into the regular mouse functions.

If not, we can use the 2 buttons for either Vol Up and Vol Dwn, or Previous/Next.

You would need to replace the default mouse drivers for the mouse you are working with. That's not a good idea though as it would involve people modifying their own drivers and the drivers would have to be hand written AND would have to be compatable with everything out there. Oh, and you'd probably need 3 different drivers, serial, PS/2 and USB mice. Not to mention their are some mice out there that have their own unique drivers...

so then you are saying the developer of this really needs to select a mouse thats easily moddable into this kind of setup? that way they could basically provide kits, the mouse and instructions for it maybe?

That would be your best bet, And I would go with a mouse from either Logitech or Microsoft. While more expensive, I've often found they are far superior in quality and can easily be found everywhere.
