No not overkill, its very cool way of doing things, i have been thinking about this for a few years
trouble is it software driven so you couldnt use it to start the car unless u had the software activate a output (relay card etc) to start the engine, you could use it to enable the igniton then hit a start button prehaps or just to gain access to the car pc system, if the supplied software allowed, i hear the software on a lot of these biometeric devices is propietry and you cant do much apart from deny access to hard disks etc

Try this, they have a fingerprint keyfob for retrofitting your home & car access systems.

And they uses capacitance based silicon sensors instead of those optical ones. will be alot more reliable and secure.

Fingerprints are cool, but I seriously want to find an iris recognition camera to incorporate into the security and computer systems in my truck. Has anyone seen a good deal on one? I've found a panasonic one for $250, but a friend says he's seen them for less. I know its overkill, but so is everything else in my truck.

I consider everything we do as overkill. For crying out loud, we spend $1000 (not counting the countless hours of work) to play music in our cars, granted that we do more stuff with it. The whole thing we do with our carputers is overkill, that's almost the point. I think it would be awesome to just get in the car, press the fingerprint reader...the car starts, the steering is unlocked, the pc starts and you're ready to go.
Better yet, mount it at the door handle,...no more need for freaking keys. I hate carying keys around.
I work for a Lexus dealer, the LS430 uses a "smartkey", you don't need the keys, but they must be in your pocket (or close). As soon as you touch the door it unlocks, you get it and just turn the ignition and go, no key needed. The only stupid thing they did was...it is still a key that you must carry...they should've made like a credit card or something smaller. (So you can just keep it in your wallet)
Maybe next year.

I think the Iris recognition camera is still too new, we've got the fingerprint reader at work for our keybox, gotta press the thing twice or more most of the time to get it to work. It won't read the first time...that would be very anoying if you want to get into your car.

Why not use something like via voice and tell the car to unlock and start if you want overkill. You can also find software for matching images to scans from a webcam. Be aware that any of these things must fail safe ie you don't want your car cutting out because it dous not recognise the driver

My friends can mimick my voice, and voice recognition will understand. I don't want them messing with my car

If you are really hardcore, you can go with one of the usb deveilopment kits

http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/e...sors/products/

I am sure you could program it to make coffee off of the exhaust as well

Doesn't Benz have the card approach to their keys of the same kind? I think C&D wrote about that... Not like I can afford either one

I was thinking about the RFID tags from phidgetsusa.com, but I want something attached to my body to activate everything. Maybe an implant..... Is there a really small version of the RFID tag ??
