I do not have a car computer and all I have is an MP3 player (actually a Pocket PC). I have a 1996 Honda Civic with factory head unit and factory tape deck. After a little googling I have discovered that this uses M-Bus - in fact it is the same except that the plug has two pins switched to encourage users to buy Honda equipment and not Alpine equipment (more $$$ for dealer). It is an 8 pin circular DIN connector, you can see it at

As I said I don't have a car computer. So there's no point in using complicated USB chip as mentioned earlier in this thread. All I want to do is have the head unit detect presence of "CD player" (the MP3 player) (and thus start playing audio from it).
Connecting the three audio pins to a 3.5 mm audio connector seems obvious. But I don't know what's required in getting the head unit to start playing audio from these audio pins. Do I have to use a simple resistor or something? Is something more elaborate required?
Basically: how to get auxiliary input into M-Bus input port with as little equipment as possible?
Thanks in advance for any help.
