http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/i...eyboards/5cca/
has anyone used this device as input? it would fit perfectly on the steering wheel, and would be really usefull- esp when surfing/searching songs.

just a thought.. but
im going to be spending what, $130 or so for the gyration kb/mouse setup- i already have the mouse for my htpc, i love that thing. $160 isn't a lot of money in the grand scheme of things.

yea but i would rather spend the 160 bucks on say upgrading to a Xenarc screen or getting a motorized in dash type screen or something that will make a difference.
I say go cheap on the trivial items

You still have to touch the pad, and the gestures look awkward. Now if you had severe carpal and couldn't operate a mouse, maybe this would be a useful product.. my $.02

alright kiddies- there's going to be no fold out screens, or any of that crap. i've been in car audio for almost 8yrs. i've also been working with computers for more than 10yrs. i've done my homework on this: a screen will be mounted into the (custom) center console. it's most likely going to be an alpine, bc it's just about the best quality- and im using the alpine pxa h700 as signal processor (opt in). optical between the computer (under passenger seat) and the controller unit, mounted under the screen. im not skimping out on trivial s***. i just wanted to know if anyone had used one of these pads before. hell, making a few gestures in the center of my steering wheel is much easier, let alone safer (when driving) then fumbling for a remote.

Are you sure you want to be putting that on your steering wheel? Since you mentioned safety, I'd rather have my airbag (unless your car predates airbags, in which case nevermind.)
For those who like the idea but find the price (or size) offputting - I think there are some software out there that allows you to do the same thing with a standard touchpad.

Try looking for an old Fellowes Internet Cruise Cat. Does the same thing for a hell of a lot less.

He's obviously done his homework and knows much more than you youngin'
He can make those 234 lines look twice as good if he spends more for the name Alpine

Yeah, I've dealt with his type before. Ain't no way he'll ever understand the difference between NTSC interlaced and 800x480 progressive. Don't try to confuse him with facts, his mind is made up.
And do7d, if you resent the spanking you've just received, check your attitude at the door and try again.

Hey, does anyone know if you can map the gestures... for example.. sliding a finger to the right to skip to next track in winamp or something like it?
BTW, I ran into this on ebay, same sort of thing i believe
but a hell of a lot cheaper.

That's the one I was talking about. You can make custom guestures and map them to what ever key combination you want including closing windows, minimizing windows, etc. The only bad thing about them is if you are running XP you MUST connect it via serial cable or you won't get the guesture functions.

I guess he is not convinced all his experiance is worth it if he is posting the question here...
Do not post asking for thoughts on a product if you have made up your mind! Certainly do not bad mouth someone for giving you what you asked for. You wanted feedback, now you have it.
Just get it and stop wasting our time.
