Actually there are 2 members doing this very advance tracker. One is based on an SBC running linux and one based on highend PIC MCU. Both are stand alone of course.

Id buy a system that could ideally be hooked into my U-blox gps (it has dual outputs), and would be standalone...

Ideally would be a way of sharing the phone between carpc and tracker...

sharing the GPS would give me dead-reckoning+keep the price down a bit

Thats the idea, just a main controller that sits between the existing GPS/GPRS thats already being used by the car PC.

I looked at that alltrack again.... it includes it's own gps/cell antenna assy..... for the $389 that this sells for you probably couldn't build it for less..... the advantage to building your own though is you can poll as much as you want for free, that's providing it works in the first place.... I like this, for $389 this may be a welcome addition to my car

lemme bring it back... wat about this device? looks even smaller and has a pc program you use on your own machine (though i guess it has a server too) http://www.action-replay.co.uk/GPS/Vehicle_Tracker.htm

I wonder why someone doesnt make something like this that uses the destinator sdk (worldwide support) then i could buy it....
